Stoddard was part of Sanger&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1921-12-December.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1921-12-December.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1566877061467000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGArb3oLbJ31PH3IYdjc8lwatkTlg\">First American Birth Control Conference<\/a> in the early 1920&#8217;s. By March of 1923, Stoddard is clearly <a href=\"https:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1922-03-March.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/1922-03-March.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1566877061467000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHFZZiWJTzmH7lGL2J3Qc5qEVvdbw\">listed<\/a> in Sanger&#8217;s Birth Control Review as a prominent director.\u00a0Live Action News previously <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-board-non-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a>\u00a0how Stoddard was also a journalist and author who served on Sanger\u2019s National Council as well as\u00a0the conference committee of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=vS3lAAAAMAAJ&amp;pg=RA19-PA9&amp;lpg=RA19-PA9&amp;dq=American+Birth+Control+League,+Lothrop+T+SToddard&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=CBroSEVpxv&amp;sig=Z5Bw0I850lHuRu7HeHjCb7P7pMM&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwivge2xt7fZAhVBb60KHSkCCqM4ChDoAQhjMA4#v=onepage&amp;q=American%20Birth%20Control%20League%2C%20Lothrop%20T%20SToddard&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First American Birth Control Conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lothrop and Sanger had two things in common: both were members of the eugenics movement &#8212; and both had connections to the Ku Klux Klan. While Sanger <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-planned-parenthood-abortion-corporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a> to meeting and speaking with members of the Klan, Stoddard went all in, and was reportedly\u00a0identified as the Exalted Cyclops of the Massachusetts chapter of the Klan.<\/p>\n<p>The New Yorker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2019\/08\/26\/when-w-e-b-du-bois-made-a-laughingstock-of-a-white-supremacist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a> is a fascinating look at the past and exposes the mindset that permeated eugenicists of Sanger&#8217;s day, which likely influenced Planned Parenthood <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-planned-parenthood-abortion-corporation\/\">leaders<\/a> like\u00a0Sanger and former Eugenics Society VP and Planned Parenthood president\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-population-control-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan F. E. B. Du Bois Made a Laughingstock of a White Supremacist,&#8221; author\u00a0<a class=\"Link__link___3dWao \" title=\"Ian Frazier\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/contributors\/ian-frazier\" rel=\"author\">Ian Frazier<\/a>\u00a0pulls the reader in with vivid snippets from the lives of Madison Grant (a <a href=\"https:\/\/amphilsoc.org\/exhibits\/treasures\/aes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founder<\/a> of the eugenics movement) as well as Stoddard.\u00a0Grant&#8217;s book,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Passing-Great-Race-Madison-Grant-ebook\/dp\/B003AYEJJG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Passing of the Great Race<\/a>, was revered by German Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. As Frazier recounted, &#8220;Grant took pride in the Nazis\u2019 use of his book and\u00a0sent them copies of a subsequent one, about how American Nordics like himself had conquered North America. He also was a director of the American Eugenics Society, thought &#8216;worthless&#8217; individuals should be sterilized, and considered his lobbying for the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924, which shut down most immigration to the U.S., to be one of the great achievements of his life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-board-non-white\/\">Planned Parenthood director: \u2018Non-white races must be excluded from America\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frazier claims Grant&#8217;s racist book deeply impacted\u00a0Stoddard, and Grant actually ended up writing the introduction to one of Stoddard&#8217;s books, &#8220;The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy.&#8221; According to Frazier, Stoddard &#8220;scare[d] his readers with the spectre of race war&#8221; and &#8220;the prospect of <em>losing<\/em> a race war.&#8221; The villains, according to Stoddard, were &#8220;mulattoes.&#8221; Stoddard was a Harvard graduate and a prolific writer with a Ph.D. in history &#8212; a highly educated individual with frightening eugenic ideas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_179461\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179461\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-179461\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Lothrop-Stoddard-racist-book-The-Rising-Tide-of-Color.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Stoddard book\" width=\"188\" height=\"268\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-179461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lothrop Stoddard wrote racist book The Rising Tide of Color, and sat on Margaret Sanger&#8217;s board<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Stoddard\u00a0had written that &#8216;mulattoes&#8217; &#8230; who could not accept their inferior status, were the chief cause of racial unrest in the United States, and he looked forward to their dying out,&#8221; Frazier said, noting that Black newspapers called Stoddard \u201cthe high priest of racial baloney\u201d and \u201cthe unbearable Lothrop Stoddard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frazier claims that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-board-non-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stoddard<\/a> denied being involved with the Klan (later reports claimed he was) but explained that Stoddard\u00a0&#8220;endorsed [the Klan&#8217;s] tactics passionately in his books. His opponent, N.A.A.C.P. founder W.E.B. DuBois, was invited by the Chicago Forum Council to debate the topic, \u201cShall the Negro Be Encouraged to Seek Cultural Equality?\u201d Live Action News obtained a copy of the poster for that debate (seen below). Frazier writes, &#8220;In smaller letters, the ad asked, &#8216;Has the Negro the Same Intellectual Possibilities As Other Races?&#8217; and below that the answer \u201cYes!\u201d appeared with a photograph of Du Bois, who would be arguing the affirmative. Alongside the answer \u201cNo!\u201d was a photograph of Lothrop Stoddard, a writer, who would argue the negative. In the picture, Stoddard projects a roguish, matin\u00e9e-idol aura, with slicked-down hair and a black mustache. Special Collections and University Archives, University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/justice-clarence-thomas-abortion-eugenics\/\">Justice Clarence Thomas gives epic history lesson on abortion and eugenics<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frazier goes into length to describe the debate between the two men, and concludes DuBois the victor with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-board-non-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stoddard<\/a>\u00a0becoming a laughing stock. Frazier writes, &#8220;The idea of watching the champion of white supremacy get shot down by a brilliant black debater had great appeal. If <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-founder-board-non-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stoddard<\/a>\u00a0had been willing, the two might have sold out halls across the country. In the process, the lunacy of his theories might have been laid bare, and the Nazis who later used Stoddard and Grant and other American racists to justify the crimes of the Third Reich might have had less to work with&#8230;.
