(Daily Signal<\/a>)\u00a0\u201cUnplanned,\u201d a movie about an abortion clinic director who left her job at Planned Parenthood, is the No. 1 DVD in Amazon sales after surpassing expectations in movie theaters.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, without being trite, I think the people have spoken,\u201d Cary Solomon, who directed the movie with Chuck Konzelman, told The Daily Signal in a phone interview Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnplanned\u201d tells the true story of Abby Johnson, a Planned Parenthood clinic director who quit her job with the nation\u2019s largest abortion provider in 2009 after having a conversion experience regarding the procedure.<\/p>\n

The movie, which stars Ashley Bratcher as Johnson, grossed $19 million in theaters over 19 weeks, according to<\/a> Box Office Mojo.<\/p>\n

Solomon said the news that \u201cUnplanned\u201d became Amazon\u2019s top-selling DVD for its official release Tuesday is especially gratifying given \u201csuppression\u201d of the movie by mainstream media and social media in an attempt to \u201cdamage\u201d it during the initial run in theaters.<\/p>\n

Obstacles to the movie\u2019s success included its \u201cR\u201d rating<\/a> from the Motion Picture Association of America and censorship<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n

Solomon said he read that the makers of the average movie are happy with sales of 20,000 to 30,000 DVDs, but that \u201cwe presold about 235,000 without even telling anyone it was out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that say?\u201d Solomon asked. \u201cIt says that we have a nation that is hungry for stories about life, but not only that [but for] true stories that reveal the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Solomon credited the film\u2019s success to God\u2019s grace:<\/p>\n

When we began, we were very concerned, very worried, very scared, and we had a Holy Spirit moment: The Spirit dropped on us and basically said, \u2018Do not be afraid. This is for my glory.\u2019 And I know that thousands of people maybe won\u2019t believe that, but that is exactly what happened.<\/em><\/p>\n

Konzelman, Solomon\u2019s co-director, told The Daily Signal that he has been pleasantly surprised how well the film has done despite the opposition encountered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re continually surprised every day. We\u2019re surprised by the obstacles, we\u2019re surprised by how every adversity seems to contain within it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit,\u201d Konzelman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just were kind of amazed every day,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Bratcher tweeted<\/a> Thursday about the development.<\/p>\n
