The Reddit user expressed that, because of an IVF mix-up resulting in using the wrong genetic material, he no longer wants the child.<\/p>\n<p>The recently-<a href=\"https:\/\/snew.notabug.io\/r\/AmItheAsshole\/comments\/corc6z\/aita_for_telling_our_surrogate_we_dont_want_the\/\">deleted post<\/a> claimed that the Reddit user and his wife had suffered several miscarriages and were unable to stay pregnant. Wanting to have their own child together, the couple hired a surrogate to be impregnated via <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tag\/ivf\/\">in-vitro fertilization (IVF)<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/national-infertility-awareness-week-ethical-treatment\/\">fertility treatment<\/a> in which &#8220;extra&#8221; embryos are <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/properly-examining-problem-ivf\/\">frequently created and destroyed<\/a>, and preborn babies are frozen in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surrogate was a nice lady who took care of her body and we got along very well,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AmItheAsshole\/comments\/corc6z\/aita_for_telling_our_surrogate_we_dont_want_the\/\">said the Reddit user<\/a>. But when the couple saw their baby, the Reddit user said he knew there was \u201csomething wrong. The baby had asian features, black hair and brown eyes when we are both white blonde folks with blue eyes. We immediately brought up the issue with the doctors and asked for a DNA test. I am not the father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allegedly, there was an \u201cextremely rare\u201d mix up with the sperm bank, and another man\u2019s genetic material had been used in the IVF process. The man and his wife said they were \u201cdevastated\u201d that the baby wasn\u2019t \u201cboth of us,\u201d and in the Reddit post\u2019s title he claimed he doesn\u2019t want the child. \u201cWe are contacting an adoption agency to place the baby in a loving home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ivf-horror-couple-wrong-babies\/\">IVF horror: Couples gives birth to wrong babies in shocking mix-ups<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jnAbwc_pHSY\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Several Reddit users noted the similarity to a story published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/parenting\/2019\/07\/10\/ivf-mix-up-second-couple-involved-alleged-baby-mix-up-sues-clinic\/1694269001\/\">USA Today<\/a>. However, this story is not unique, despite the claim of the Reddit user, and it exposes several problems with IVF and surrogacy. In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ivf-horror-couple-wrong-babies\/\">March of this year<\/a>, a couple in New York gave birth to twin boys who were not biologically related to them, or even to each other. As a result of the mix-up, the devastated couple were forced to give up the babies to their biological parents. Due to another IVF mix-up in 2018, a couple from Connecticut <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/04\/25\/couple-had-son-of-different-race-after-clinic-mixed-up-embryos-suit\/\">live in fear<\/a> that the true biological father of their baby could return and claim their son. In 2009, a couple <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/07\/06\/queens-mom-gives-birth-to-someone-elses-babies-after-shocking-mix-up-lawsuit\/\">gave up the twin boys<\/a>\u00a0they birthed after learning they weren&#8217;t genetically related to them &#8212; \u00a0nor were the boys even related <em>to each other<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The IVF industry largely treats the children created through the process as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/does-ivf-turn-children-into-consumer-products-to-be-bought-and-sold\/\">commodities<\/a>\u00a0to be obtained as desired by adults, and not as individuals with their own rights. Surrogate mothers are treated as incubators-for-hire, being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jolt.richmond.edu\/2018\/01\/24\/americas-overlooked-surrogate-mothers\/\">exploited\u00a0<\/a>as women of typically\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gloria-steinem-commercial-surrogacy-arguments-abortion\/\">lower socio-economic status<\/a>, who have little say over the babies they carry. As described by the Reddit user, the surrogate mother expressed a desire to adopt but was unable to do so: \u201cThe surrogate was really heartbroken as well after we revealed what happened but can\u2019t afford to keep it as she already has five kids.\u201d Other surrogate mothers are sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/surrogate-mom-ordered-abort-baby\/\">pressured or even forced to abort<\/a> children who are, for whatever reason, inconvenient for genetic parents.<\/p>\n<p>As Robert George said on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/robert.p.george.39\/posts\/10218338265180649\">Facebook page<\/a>, \u201cThe desire to help the infertile to have children that are biologically their own is understandable, even laudable.
