Black genocide<\/em> — that’s what Black leaders have historically considered measures like abortion<\/a>, viewing it with suspicion<\/a>; they’ve\u00a0also strongly\u00a0opposed<\/a> taxpayer funding of abortion. Notable Black leaders<\/a> like\u00a0Fannie Lou Hamer<\/a>, Dr. Mildred Jefferson<\/a>,\u00a0Dr. Dolores Bernadette Grier<\/a>,\u00a0Iowa Rep. June Franklin<\/a>, Erma Clardy Craven<\/a>, and even<\/a> comedian Dick Gregory<\/a>\u00a0all viewed abortion and population control as genocide targeted toward their communities.<\/p>\n

They had good reason to believe this. After all,\u00a0Planned Parenthood\u00a0founder<\/a>\u00a0Margaret Sanger was a member<\/a> of the eugenics society and stacked<\/a> her board of directors with eugenicists. She spoke<\/a> to the Ku Klux Klan,\u00a0spoke against\u00a0immigrants<\/a>, and favored forced\u00a0sterilization<\/a>. But it wasn’t just Sanger — Planned Parenthood’s ties<\/a> to eugenics go well beyond<\/a> its founder. Planned Parenthood’s former president Alan F. Guttmacher was a former VP of the eugenics societ<\/a>y, and was responsible<\/a>\u00a0for moving Planned Parenthood into committing abortions. The suspicion in the Black community persisted, so Planned Parenthood appointed<\/a>\u00a0Black leaders to quell those suspicions. Despite this, a former Black Planned Parenthood board member even\u00a0called<\/a> Planned Parenthood’s eugenics roots “racist,” as have additional<\/a> Black leaders.<\/p>\n

While today, many Black leaders seem to have bought into Planned Parenthood’s sales pitch, pro-lifers have long contended that abortion is a tool of eugenics that disproportionately affects the Black community. And looking at the most recent data<\/a> (2015) from the Centers for Disease Control showing numbers from 30 reporting areas, it’s easy to see why.<\/p>\n

In 2015<\/a>, the CDC reported<\/a> a total of 638,169 total abortions. Since only 30 areas reported abortions by race\/ethnicity, we estimated the total of abortions by multiplying the CDC’s abortions by their abortion percentage per category (CDC’s abortion totals are significantly lower than the Guttmacher Institute’s because the\u00a0organizations gather abortion data differently<\/a>.) Using the most recent\u00a0US Census Bureau<\/a>\u00a0data\u00a0estimates<\/a>\u00a0on race in the U.S., we estimate the following:<\/p>\n
