Live Action News has previously featured <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/college-students-walk-america-pro-life-awareness\/\">walkers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biking-for-babies-10-years-fundraising-pregnancy-centers\/\">bikers<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/seminiarian-triathlon-prolife\/\">triathlete<\/a> raising funds for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-pregnancy-centers-funding-communities-millions\/\">pregnancy centers<\/a>\u00a0as well as awareness of various aspects of the pro-life cause. During the three-day <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erniesride.com\/\">Ernie&#8217;s Ride<\/a>\u00a0from August 2-4, seven cyclists biked 320 miles from <a href=\"https:\/\/butlercountyoh.us\/ernies-ride-celebrates-life-with-320-mile-bike-ride\/\">Cincinnati to Cleveland<\/a>, raising both awareness about the incredibly high abortion rate of babies diagnosed prenatally with Down syndrome and $22,500 for two Ohio pregnancy centers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fdoug.shope.5%2Fposts%2F2578696855516266&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"489\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ernie&#8217;s Ride founder Doug Shope started the ride solo in 2014. That year, he read in a news article that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/iceland-isnt-eradicating-down-syndrome-it-is-killing-every-person-who-has-it\/\">in Iceland<\/a> virtually 100% of babies diagnosed in the womb with Down syndrome are aborted.\u00a0 Shope was personally floored by the story, considering his own positive experience growing up with his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erniesride.com\/meeternie\">uncle, Ernie Nicholson<\/a>, who had Down syndrome and lived to see his 58th birthday. In Ernie&#8217;s bio on the Ernie&#8217;s Ride website, Shope describes his late uncle as &#8220;definitely memorable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He writes of Ernie, &#8220;Ernie was different, very different, from almost everyone else that I knew. The world in which he lived was different. Physically, it was small &#8211; &#8211; not much beyond the inside of my grandma&#8217;s house, spiced up with a daily trek down their short driveway to pick up their copy of the Arkansas Democrat or to carefully and deliberately retrieve letters from the mailbox by the road.\u00a0Imaginatively, though, Ernie&#8217;s world was wide open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amazing-study-showcases-positive-capabilities-down-syndrome\/\">AMAZING: Study showcases the positive capabilities of people with Down syndrome<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shope shares that Ernie kept several boxes &#8220;crammed full&#8221; of prized pictures- pictures of family, friends, acquaintances, movie stars, and he had a story for each and every one. Shope continues, &#8220;Sometimes when Ernie told me about me, he actually displayed a picture of me. Most of the time, however, his gentle, pale-white hand grasped a newsprint, gray-scale, boyhood image of some celebrity. Sometimes it was a young John Wayne. Other times maybe Mickey Rooney or someone lesser-known. I couldn&#8217;t tell and it didn&#8217;t matter.\u00a0What mattered was that I always knew that I mattered to Ernie&#8230;.What mattered was: I had a story. And my story had a place in Ernie&#8217;s stories. In Ernie&#8217;s heart. And Ernie took the time with me to share those stories. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F1976CharlesHughes%2Fvideos%2F10216973640347608%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shope&#8217;s fond memories of his uncle&#8217;s tender love are just one example echoing the experience of countless family members and friends of individuals with Down syndrome. Every human life is unique, precious, unrepeatable.
