Abortion is currently only legal in cases of incest, fetal abnormality, or a perceived health issue in the mother.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first piece of pro-abortion legislation under Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, who promised to advance the abortion issue after winning the 2017 election.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-newzealand-abortion\/new-zealand-to-decriminalize-abortion-laws-critics-say-bill-falls-short-idUSKCN1UV04U\">reports<\/a> that under the terms of the new bill, women less than 20 weeks pregnant would be able to obtain an abortion without prior approval from a doctor. After 20 weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/aug\/05\/new-zealand-unveils-bill-to-legalise-abortion\">notes The Guardian<\/a>, at least one health practitioner would need to\u00a0\u201creasonably believe the abortion is appropriate with regard to the pregnant woman\u2019s physical and mental health, and well-being\u201d before she could obtain an abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washington-post-fact-check-united-states-abortion-laws-extreme-compared-rest-world\/\">WashPo fact check: United States is extreme, one of only seven countries allowing abortion after 20 weeks<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The proposed legislation also stipulates the designation of &#8220;safe areas&#8221; around abortion facilities &#8212; akin to the frequently attempted &#8220;bubble zones&#8221; or &#8220;buffer zones&#8221; in the United States. This would prevent pro-lifers from providing much-needed guidance or counseling to women entering abortion facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Abortion is the only medical procedure that is still a crime in New Zealand. It&#8217;s time for this to change,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/05\/health\/new-zealand-abortion-bill-scli-intl\/index.html\">said<\/a> Justice Minister Andrew Little, who is spearheading the bill&#8217;s advancement. &#8220;This bill will modernize the laws on abortion, by removing it from the Crimes Act and bringing the law into line with many other developed countries.&#8221; But what Little fails to mention is that abortion is a medical procedure <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-not-healthcare-former-abortion-workers-speak\/\">unlike any other<\/a>, with the express purpose of deliberately\u00a0<em>ending<\/em> a human life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, not all abortion supporters are happy. Some are disappointed that the abortion legislation only allows unrestricted abortions up to 20 weeks, calling the new bill a &#8220;mixed bag.&#8221; Here&#8217;s what 20 weeks looks like &#8212; a clearly human child with all her features:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-208105\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20-weeks-ehd-org.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20-weeks-ehd-org.jpg 546w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20-weeks-ehd-org-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20-weeks-ehd-org-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A preborn child at 20 weeks\u00a0can hear and begin responding to &#8220;a growing range of sounds,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/movies\/80\/Responds-to-Sound\">Endowment for Human Development<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehd.org\/dev_article_unit14.php\">child that age<\/a> already has sweat glands, produces melanin, secretes insulin, and has a complete corpus callosum (the structure connecting both hemispheres of the brain).<\/p>\n<p>National president of the pro-abortion group ALRANZ, Terry Bellamak, complained that while the pro-abortion law is &#8220;not as good as it could have been&#8230; it\u2019s so much better than the status quo. We have to give the government props for that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, Voice for Life, a New Zealand anti-abortion group, expressed its disappointment in this new act of legislation. <a href=\"http:\/\/voiceforlife.org.nz\/blog\/we-will-be-the-loud-voice-for-the-voiceless-vulnerable-in-the-face-of-jacinda-arderns-extreme-abortion-bill\/\">According to the organization<\/a>, a 2016 Curia Market Research Poll found that <em>56 percent<\/em> of New Zealand women stated that they wanted time limits on abortions to be <strong>shorter<\/strong> than the proposed 20 weeks.
