Prince Harry has announced<\/a> that he and wife Meghan Markle plan to have just two children “maximum” out of concerns for the environment.\u00a0In the September issue of British Vogue, which is guest-edited by Meghan, Prince Harry spoke with primatologist Jane Goodall about climate change. That’s when Goodall pushed the prince to say he would only have two children.<\/p>\n

“What we need to remind everybody is: these are things that are happening now,” said Harry about the current state of the environment. “We are already living in it. We are the frog in the water and it’s already been brought to the boil. Which is terrifying.”<\/p>\n

He went on to say that he sees issues with the planet from a different perspective since his son Archie was born, believing he needs to help keep the environment healthy for the generations to come.\u00a0“I view it differently now, without question,” he explained. “But I’ve always wanted to try and ensure that, even before having a child and hoping to have children….”<\/p>\n

That’s when Goodall cut him off to (judgementally) say, “Not too many!”<\/p>\n

“Two, maximum!” Harry assured her. “But I’ve always thought: this place is borrowed. And, surely, being as intelligent as we all are, or as evolved as we all are supposed to be, we should be able to leave something better for the next generation.”<\/p>\n

Apparently, it’s only about “choice” when the choice is to not<\/em> have children. But having children doesn’t mean we can’t also make positive changes for the planet. As Live Action President Lila Rose pointed out in a tweet, children are not the problem.<\/p>\n

“Kids are never the problem,” she wrote. “We don’t solve concerns of war, the economy or climate by rejecting the GIFT of kids. We solve our problems by taking ownership for whatever our part is in them, & by using the creativity, gifts & talents we have to serve others & make the world better.”<\/p>\n
