Efforts by the Center for Reproductive Rights and other pro-choice individuals led to the decision.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-12963 alignright\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" title=\"187640-personhood\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/187640-personhood-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/187640-personhood-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/187640-personhood.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>In August, Personhood Oklahoma filed a petition asking the United States Supreme Court to review the decision by the Oklahoma Supreme Court. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lldf.org\/in-the-public-square\/life-legal-defense-foundation-files-friend-of-the-court-brief-asking-the-united-states-supreme-court-to-review-personhood-oklahoma-decision\/\">The Life Legal Defense Foundation is supporting the petition<\/a> by Personhood Oklahoma with a brief. The brief alleges that the Oklahoma court \u201cacted precipitously to deprive the petitioners and the people of the state of Oklahoma of their right to engage in political expression on a matter of great public concern.\u201d You can read the full brief <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lldf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oklahoma_Personhood_v_Barber.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The decision by the Oklahoma Supreme Court was based on the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s decision in <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>. The decision affirms that women should be able to obtain an abortion without \u201cundue burden\u201d from state laws. The Oklahoma Supreme Court, however, made their decision \u201cpreemptively\u201d by finding the law unconstitutional, according to the Life Legal Defense Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Allison Aranda, senior staff counsel for the Life Legal Defense Foundation, stated, \u201cI find it incredible that the supreme court of any state would usurp the right of the people to initiate legislation and engage in political discourse about the merits of any proposed law. The right to bring matters of public concern to national attention through the initiative process is fundamental to bringing about political change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Life Legal Defense Foundation\u2019s executive director, Dana Cody, \u201c[i]f the United States Supreme Court does not affirm the right of the people to engage in the initiative process, the people\u2019s power will diminish, and we\u2019ll be stuck with activist judges.
