{"id":207111,"date":"2019-07-31T11:13:33","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T16:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=207111"},"modified":"2019-07-30T21:25:16","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T02:25:16","slug":"amazing-study-showcases-positive-capabilities-down-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amazing-study-showcases-positive-capabilities-down-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"AMAZING: Study showcases the positive capabilities of people with Down syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>An amazing study which reveals positive developmental assessments of people with Down syndrome was recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ajmg.a.61004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a>\u00a0in the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ajmg.a.61004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Journal of Medical Genetics (AJMG<\/a>). Authors Gert de Graaf, Susan P. Levine, Richard Goldstein, and Brian G. Skotko,\u00a0attempted to document a &#8220;realistic assessment of the range of functional abilities found in people with Down syndrome&#8221; so more accurate information might be used to &#8220;assist in counseling expectant parents.&#8221; Authors asked parents of children with Down syndrome from the United States and the Netherlands to assess 11 functional skills of their sons and daughters, and found that the majority of people with Down syndrome in the United States:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>can walk by 25 months of age.<\/li>\n<li>can speak reasonably well by 12 years.<\/li>\n<li>can maintain their own personal hygiene by 13 years.<\/li>\n<li>can work independently by 20 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Previous research has documented that expectant couples often feel that they receive incomplete and inaccurate information during prenatal counseling,&#8221;\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30582784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AJMG <\/a>study discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Authors also found that &#8220;scant research has assessed the functional skills attained by people with Down syndrome.&#8221; An <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/new-study-details-development-benchmarks-for-people-with-down-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> of the study&#8217;s findings published by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) found that &#8220;the results provide actual benchmarks to assist treatment providers and to encourage expectant parents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/today-show-down-syndrome-negative-didnt-tell\/\">SHAME: Today Show portrayed Down syndrome in a purely negative light. Here\u2019s what they didn\u2019t tell you.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Findings regarding children with Down syndrome (Ds), according to CLI, also included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Walking<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The majority of U.S. children with Ds walk by 25 months. Among the Dutch, 36% of children with Ds walk reasonably well by age two and 70% by age three. Overall, the difference in walking disappeared by age five.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speaking <\/strong>&#8211; The majority of U.S. and Dutch children with Ds spoke in a comprehensible manner by age 12.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reading<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a048% of U.S. adults and 63% of Dutch adults with Ds read reasonably well by ages 21 to 30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 37% of U.S. adults and 52% of Dutch adults with Ds wrote reasonably well by ages 21 to 30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eating<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Nearly all U.S. and Dutch adults with Ds ate reasonably well by adulthood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meal preparation<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 45% of U.S. adults and 30% of Dutch adults with Ds prepared their own meals by age 31.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-hygiene<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The majority of children with Ds took reasonable care of their own self-hygiene by 13 years of age. The number rose to about 70% by ages 21 to 30.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employment<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 71% of U.S. adults and 65% of Dutch adults with Ds worked jobs by age 31.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dating and going out<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 25% of US adults dated by age 31. 61% of Dutch adults would go out (including with friends) by age 31.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independent travel<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 30% of U.S. adults and 17% of Dutch adults with Ds traveled independently by age 31.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independent living<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; 34% of U.S. adults and 30% of Dutch adults with Ds lived independently by age 31.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the United States does not collect meticulous statistics on how many babies with Down syndrome are aborted, a\u00a02012 publication in\u00a0<em>Prenatal Diagnosis<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/pd.2910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> a\u00a067 percent termination rate following prenatal diagnosis of babies with the condition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Evidence suggests that termination rates are lower than noted in a previous review that was based on less contemporary studies and had an international focus,&#8221; the report states. But although the number is high, it is surprisingly <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/new-study-abortion-after-prenatal-diagnosis-of-down-syndrome-reduces-down-syndrome-community-by-thirty-percent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lower<\/a> than other countries like France (77%\/2015) and Denmark (98%\/2015) according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/down-syndrome-iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a>.\u00a0In Iceland, major media outlets including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7dDS6NB1OkU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>\u00a0say the numbers are much higher. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/down-syndrome-iceland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS<\/a>\u00a0reported that &#8220;in the early 2000s, the vast majority of women &#8212; close to 100 percent &#8212; who received a positive test for Down syndrome terminated their pregnancy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7dDS6NB1OkU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.cdn.down-syndrome.org\/files\/reports\/research\/births-prevalence\/usa\/down-syndrome-population-usa-factsheet-201903.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact sheet<\/a> published by two of the medical experts who authored the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30582784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AJMG <\/a>study noted that, &#8220;In the few decades since prenatal screening was introduced, more pregnancies with Down syndrome have been diagnosed prenatally and terminated.&#8221;\u00a0 The authors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.cdn.down-syndrome.org\/files\/reports\/research\/births-prevalence\/usa\/down-syndrome-population-usa-factsheet-201903.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> that &#8220;approximately 3,200 Down syndrome-related elective pregnancy terminations performed as of 2013 in the U.S.&#8221;\u00a0 Tragically, the fact sheet also claimed, &#8220;in the U.S., as a result of elective terminations, we estimate there was a 31% reduction in the numbers of babies with Down syndrome born in 2013.
