{"id":207031,"date":"2019-07-27T08:47:38","date_gmt":"2019-07-27T13:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=207031"},"modified":"2019-07-23T23:34:48","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T04:34:48","slug":"uk-choir-babies-postpartum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-choir-babies-postpartum\/","title":{"rendered":"UK choir for parents welcomes babies, helps combat postpartum depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/music-news\/parent-and-baby-choir-supporting-new-mums\/?fbclid=IwAR1pE0nrDsrLADTlq44oFuYqbOgQ0gARKmo85VSBKiUBdgXbXMcxVZZRWO8\"> Bristol, United Kingdom choir<\/a> is hitting all the right notes when it comes to supporting new moms by creating both a choir for pregnant women and a choir for new parents.<\/p>\n<p>Choir founder Rosie Sleightholme, a classically-trained musician, originally founded the choir for pregnant women after feeling &#8220;exhausted&#8221; early in her first pregnancy and &#8220;quite isolated&#8221; due to not knowing any other pregnant women. That first choir was called Womb Sisters, and it provided participants with both camaraderie and music therapy.<\/p>\n<p>After giving birth to her daughter, Sleightholme went on to found a choir for the other women who had also delivered their children (new dads and grandparents are welcome as well), and she encouraged them to bring their babies with them. Steigholme said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/music-news\/parent-and-baby-choir-supporting-new-mums\/?fbclid=IwAR1pE0nrDsrLADTlq44oFuYqbOgQ0gARKmo85VSBKiUBdgXbXMcxVZZRWO8\">article for ClassicFm<\/a>, &#8220;I set up my parent and baby choir, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Folks-Bairns-Parent-and-Baby-Choir-327342331308352\/?fref=mentions\">Folks and Bairns<\/a>, in January [2018], as the other women also had their babies and still wanted to sing together. It made sense!&#8221;\u00a0As shown in the clip below, the babies play at their mothers&#8217; feet during the rehearsals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ffolksandbairns%2Fvideos%2F497183501085782%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me, it\u2019s all about community. There\u2019s a real sense of magic that\u2019s created when people sing in\u00a0harmony,&#8221; she explained regarding how the choir helps new moms dealing with postpartum depression. &#8220;At choir, we tend to sing in three-part harmonies \u2013 you can sing one line of a melody, but when you have three parts coming together there\u2019s something very special about that and it makes people feel as though they\u2019re part of something whole, that they\u2019re all equally needed in creating this beautiful sound.\u00a0Singing\u00a0releases endorphins and creates oxytocin too, so it\u2019s pretty impossible to sing and not feel really great!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-olympic-medalist-doctors-future-preborn\/\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pregnant Olympic gold medalist\u2019s life story proves doctors can\u2019t predict the future of preborn babies<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sleightholme noted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/music-news\/singing-helps-post-natal-depression\/\">January 2018 study<\/a> released by the British Journal of Psychiatry which found that participating in a singing group significantly decreased symptoms of postpartum depression in women with moderate to severe symptoms. Furthermore, this intervention was noted to be more effective than more traditional interventions such as &#8220;creative play exercises&#8221; or &#8220;family support, antidepressants, or mindfulness.&#8221; There are also positive effects of early exposure to music on the children as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ffolksandbairns%2Fposts%2F332870207422231%3A0&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"472\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of the mums have said to me that while they\u2019re singing at choir, it\u2019s not about their\u00a0baby, it\u2019s about time for them,&#8221; Sleightholme said. &#8220;When you have a child, you\u2019re always in this mode where you\u2019re aware of your child or thinking about your child. But at Folks and Bairns, you\u2019re doing an activity for you, meeting other people and having fun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The choir&#8217;s special focus on supporting new mothers\u00a0<em>and<\/em> welcoming<em>\u00a0<\/em>their children is key to creating a culture of life.
