Under normal circumstances, she said she could accept a child with Down syndrome, but thought she couldn’t afford it. “After doing a cost analysis, calling our insurance to see what therapies they supported, and talking to friends and strangers with experience in this arena, we determined our freelance, tight-income lifestyle could not give a baby with Down syndrome the quality of life she deserved,” she wrote. “We decided we would terminate if the amniocentesis also came back positive.”

READ: Man says father with Down syndrome inspired him to be the ‘best person’ possible

Though they had joyfully anticipated their baby’s arrival, the possibility of Down syndrome changed everything. (To put this in perspective, care of a household pet can cost more than this.) “I think many people will be surprised to learn that parents have few extra medical expenses when raising a child or adolescent with Down syndrome, since health insurance covers most of the costs,” study author Dr. Brian Skotko noted. Many couples look online for information and are scared by what they find. “This can leave them to wonder whether their families will be facing financial hardship; so we wanted to provide them with accurate data….”

Every state offers early intervention services, often at no cost, where parents can receive therapies, even in their own homes.

Medicaid or SSI is commonly available for children with disabilities, with roughly half of all children with special needs covered.

While Kim claims few people with Down syndrome can live independently, this is a misconception; increasingly, they are able to work, live independently, and be productive community members.

People with Down syndrome are living longer, healthier lives with more opportunities than ever. Yet Kim regurgitates ableist, inaccurate stereotypes about Down syndrome, encouraging abortion.

Perhaps our society could and should offer more support for people with disabilities. But the answer is not to prevent them from living. Abortion allows ableism to continue and provides no incentive for the status quo to change.
