{"id":205400,"date":"2019-06-26T10:00:34","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T15:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=205400"},"modified":"2024-09-20T12:40:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T17:40:48","slug":"pro-life-replies-women-back-alley-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-replies-women-back-alley-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: Will more women die from back-alley abortions if they can\u2019t get them legally?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The latest video in Live Action\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/prolifereplies.liveaction.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPro-Life Replies\u201d<\/a> series was released today in response to the claim that &#8220;if abortion is made illegal, women will have dangerous back alley abortions.&#8221; The argument from many abortion advocates is that society will never get rid of abortion entirely, and if it&#8217;s illegal it will be unsafe &#8212; and therefore, they say, we need to keep abortion legal. This argument is severely lacking for several reasons, one of which is the fact that making <em>anything<\/em> illegal rarely stops that action altogether. Murder and theft are illegal, but homicides and burglaries still happen &#8212; and that&#8217;s because protecting life and protecting citizens&#8217; private property are two important roles of government.<\/p>\n<p>As for multiple other reasons why this argument is deficient, we turn to former abortionist and one-time Planned Parenthood medical director Dr. Kathi Aultman, who explains in the video below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1s9WOBihWU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Aultman states that she &#8220;used to perform first trimester suction abortions and second trimester dismemberment abortions&#8221; before she became pro-life, because she &#8220;felt I was doing something good for women.&#8221; She states that she also &#8220;used to think that legal abortion was necessary to protect women from the dangers of illegal abortion.&#8221; Aultman even admit to having had an abortion herself. But something changed her mind, and now she is speaking out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no such thing as a &#8220;safe abortion&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-205437\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/abortion-not-safe-1-700x328.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/abortion-not-safe-1-700x328.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/abortion-not-safe-1-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/abortion-not-safe-1-768x360.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/abortion-not-safe-1-500x234.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/abortion-not-safe-1.jpg 931w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Aultman says that abortion harms women and kills children, and because of this, it cannot be safe. &#8220;One person is killed, and the other is at risk for serious complications, including death.&#8221; Aultman is correct. From the 1940\u2019s to the 1970\u2019s, deaths of women due to abortion rapidly declined because of better medicine and increased use of antibiotics, not because abortion was made legal.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many &#8212; including Planned Parenthood president Leana Wen &#8212; have tried to claim that thousands of women died every year from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in all 50 states. But this claim was actually based on a fabrication by former abortionist and NARAL founder Bernard Nathanson, who claimed the figure was 5,000 to 10,000 women per year. &#8220;I confess I knew the figures were totally false,&#8221; he admitted in his book, Aborting America, after he converted to the pro-life position. In addition, the Washington Post Fact Checker recently gave Wen&#8217;s claim that thousands of women died yearly from illegal abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washington-post-pinocchios-planned-parenthood-abortion-deaths\/\">Four Pinocchios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Aultman rightly notes that &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1972, the year before Roe v Wade, 39 women died from illegal abortion, and 24 women died from legal abortion. In 1973, the year of Roe v Wade, 19 women died from illegal abortion, and 25 women died from legal abortion. So, in the year that abortion was nationally legalized, more women died from legal abortion than illegal abortion.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition, abortion advocates frequently try to tie worsening maternal mortality rates to pro-life laws. This is simply untrue, especially if you look as an example at other countries where abortion has been heavily restricted. Dr. Aultman notes, &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States has a maternal mortality rate of around 14 deaths per 100,000 live births, but in Poland, for example, where abortion is illegal except in rare cases, the maternal mortality rate is only 3 deaths per 100,000 live births. Or Malta, where abortion is illegal for any reason, the maternal mortality rate is only 9 deaths per 100,000 live births.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bottom line, says Dr. Aultman, is that abortion kills human beings and does potential <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-trainers-first-trimester-major-risks\/\">physical<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/danish-study-shows-long-term-risks-of-abortion\/\">emotional<\/a> harm to mothers.
