Live Action News has been analyzing the effort to expand abortion, and has documented the various abortion pill <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/whos-who-abortion-pill-reversal-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collaborators<\/a> working behind the scenes on various <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dangerous-self-abortion-pill-push\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trials<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-promotes-telabortion-question-safe-question-that\/\">studies<\/a>\u00a0(read more <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/telabortion-abortion-pill-study-profit-expansion\/\">here<\/a>)\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funding streams<\/a>, which all happen to be closely connected. In addition, Live Action News has documented the push for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lawmakers-fda-illegal-abortion-pill-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal dispensing<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dangerous pills<\/a>\u00a0and the effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-ignores-profit-abortion-pill-reversal-researcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discredit<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/whos-who-abortion-pill-reversal-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion pill reversal.<\/a>\u00a0Now, we&#8217;ve analyzed changes reported under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT02513043?term=Gynuity+Health+Projects&amp;recrs=ab&amp;rank=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Direct-To-Consumer<\/a>\u00a0protocol (pills sent via mail after a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/telabortion.org\/faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TelAbortion<\/a>\u00a0or telemedicine interview) and are seeing that FDA regulations are being skirted in the name of continually broadening &#8220;clinical trials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BACKGROUND:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The abortion pill regimen is made up of two drugs: Mifeprex and Misoprostol.<\/li>\n<li>Mifeprex was approved in 2000.<\/li>\n<li>It was brought to the U.S. by the eugenics-founded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Population Council.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The pill&#8217;s manufacturer, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DANCO Laboratories<\/a>, is a highly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secretive company<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Packard Foundation and\u00a0other pro-abortion philanthropy groups\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/population-council-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeded<\/a>\u00a0DANCO.<\/li>\n<li>Packard is now funding groups and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> that claim abortion pill expansion is safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_191477\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191477\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191477\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Packard-Founation-invested-in-abortion-pill-manufacturer-DANCO.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Packard Foundation invested in abortion pill manufacturer DANCO (Image: David and Lucile Packard Foundation )\" width=\"1070\" height=\"449\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-191477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Packard Foundation invested in abortion pill manufacturer DANCO (Image: David and Lucile Packard Foundation )<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>FDA&#8217;s SAFETY REQUIREMENTS KNOWN AS REMS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FDA currently requires Mifeprex to be placed under a safety system called REMS\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/aboutfda\/transparency\/basics\/ucm325201.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy<\/a>), which is a \u201csafety strategy to manage a known or potential serious risk associated with a medicine and to enable patients to have continued access to such medicines by managing their safe use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the REMS Program, the FDA states, \u201cMifeprex and the approved generic version of Mifeprex\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230; [may] only be supplied directly to healthcare providers who are certified to prescribe the drug product and who meet certain qualifications.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; are only available to be dispensed in certain healthcare settings, specifically, clinics, medical offices and hospitals, by or under the supervision of a certified prescriber.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; are not available in retail pharmacies and are not legally available over the Internet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Without REMS, abortion pills could be ordered online, picked up at any pharmacy, and prescribed by any health care provider.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_205069\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205069\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-205069\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TalAbortion-a-workaround-abortion-laws.jpg\" alt=\"Image: TalAbortion a workaround abortion laws\" width=\"460\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TalAbortion-a-workaround-abortion-laws.jpg 460w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TalAbortion-a-workaround-abortion-laws-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-205069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TelAbortion a workaround abortion laws<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>TELABORTION CLINICAL TRIAL:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In theory, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/patients\/clinical-trials-what-patients-need-know\/clinical-research-versus-medical-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trials<\/a> are used to test a specific drug and hopefully alleviate safety issues that arise. But with expansion of this abortion pill clinical trial there is a growing concern it is less of a clinical trial and more of a permanent way to skirt the FDA&#8217;s REMS system. In fact, a recent interview with the co-leader of this Gynuity sponsored trial, Erica Chong, by the online media group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90358032\/abortion-crackdown-may-also-affect-medical-abortions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fast Company<\/a>, noted, &#8220;The hope is to get enough providers on board so TelAbortion can eventually go from research study to full-blown service.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/telabortion.org\/get-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TelAbortion<\/a>\u00a0clinical trial was announced in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/history\/NCT02513043?V_1=View#StudyPageTop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015<\/a>. When the (then cohort) clinical trial began recruiting in <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/history\/NCT02513043?V_3=View#StudyPageTop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>, they <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/history\/NCT02513043?A=1&amp;B=9&amp;C=Side-by-Side#StudyPageTop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anticipated<\/a> an enrollment of 50 participants with eligibility ages between (believe it or not) <em>11<\/em> to 50 years old and an estimated completion that same year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, there were only <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160802024724\/http:\/telabortion.org\/get-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two locations<\/a> for the trial listed, as seen in the screen below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_205035\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205035\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-205035\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TelAbortion-screen-from-2016-two-locations.jpg\" alt=\"Image: TelAbortion screen from 2016 two locations\" width=\"765\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TelAbortion-screen-from-2016-two-locations.jpg 917w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TelAbortion-screen-from-2016-two-locations-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TelAbortion-screen-from-2016-two-locations-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TelAbortion-screen-from-2016-two-locations-700x480.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/TelAbortion-screen-from-2016-two-locations-500x343.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-205035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TelAbortion screen from 2016 two locations<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, as of the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/history\/NCT02513043?A=1&amp;B=9&amp;C=Side-by-Side#StudyPageTop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">date<\/a> of this article (June 2019) the now defined &#8220;case-only&#8221; (instead of &#8220;cohort&#8221;)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT02513043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trial<\/a>\u00a0currently intends to enroll <em>1,000 participants with age <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT02513043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eligibility<\/a> as young as <strong>10 years old<\/strong><\/em>. Why Gynuity Health Projects moved the recruitment age even lower is not stated, but this is concerning, given past <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-victims-sexual-abusers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abuses<\/a> by abortion facilities and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-ignored-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood<\/a> centers&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/what-we-do\/investigations\/aidingabusers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failure to report<\/a> child sexual abuse, along with potential violations of parental consent and notification laws in certain states.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_205033\" style=\"width: 684px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205033\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-205033\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Feasibility-TelAbortion-clinical-trial-ages-10-to-50-accessed-June-20-2019.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Feasibility TelAbortion clinical trial ages 10 to 50 accessed June 20 2019\" width=\"674\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Feasibility-TelAbortion-clinical-trial-ages-10-to-50-accessed-June-20-2019.jpg 674w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Feasibility-TelAbortion-clinical-trial-ages-10-to-50-accessed-June-20-2019-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Feasibility-TelAbortion-clinical-trial-ages-10-to-50-accessed-June-20-2019-500x336.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-205033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Feasibility TelAbortion clinical trial ages 10 to 50 accessed June 20 2019<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to those changes, the completion date continues to be pushed out, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT02513043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">currently<\/a> set for June of 2020. There is also a growing list of <a href=\"https:\/\/telabortion.org\/get-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locations<\/a> (see below), enabling the abortion pill to be dispensed even more widely, <em>without<\/em> existing REMS safety requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words, the study just keeps getting bigger and broader, with no FDA safety requirements in place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains (Denver, CO, and New Mexico)<\/li>\n<li>Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette (Portland, OR, and Washington)<\/li>\n<li>Oregon Health and Sciences University Women&#8217;s Health Research Unit (Portland, OR, and Washington)<\/li>\n<li>Carafem (Atlanta, GA)<\/li>\n<li>Maine Family Planning (Augusta, ME)<\/li>\n<li>The University of Hawaii Women&#8217;s Options Centers (Honolulu, HI)<\/li>\n<li>Choices Women&#8217;s Medical Center (Jamaica, New York)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The aforementioned media group, Fast Company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90358032\/abortion-crackdown-may-also-affect-medical-abortions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>\u00a0another &#8220;workaround&#8221; to existing laws, writing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>In some cases, TelAbortion providers are physically located in one state but licensed in another, which allows them to reach clients there as well&#8230;. Recently, the FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders\/ucm492705.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated<\/a>\u00a0its adverse effects reports through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/downloads\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders\/UCM603000.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018<\/a>, revealing\u00a0<strong>24 deaths<\/strong>\u00a0of women associated with the abortion pill since it\u2019s\u00a0 September 2000 approval.\u00a0 To date, the report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documents<\/a>\u00a0nearly\u00a04,200 reported adverse effects, including hospitalization and other serious complications. But under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/nda\/2016\/020687Orig1s020RemsR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 changes<\/a>, the drug\u2019s manufacturer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DANCO<\/a>,\u00a0<em><strong>no longer has to report non-fatal adverse effects<\/strong><\/em>, so we can only imagine what the number really is.<\/p>\n<h6>Editor&#8217;s Note: FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in women who took mifepristone. As of June 30, 2021, there were reports of 26 deaths of women associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis), including some that were fatal. The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient.
