{"id":204579,"date":"2019-06-13T10:00:21","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T15:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=204579"},"modified":"2019-06-13T10:41:35","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T15:41:35","slug":"corporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/corporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate misogyny: Nearly 200 CEOs claim banning abortion is bad for business"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In response to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/debunking-9-myths-alabama-abortion-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama&#8217;s new heartbeat law<\/a>, which bans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion<\/a> after a preborn child&#8217;s heartbeat can be detected, and similar laws recently passed in numerous other states, a group of CEOs has signed on to a full-page ad in the New York Times claiming that restricting abortion is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/06\/09\/nearly-200-ceos-sign-letter-calling-abortion-bans-bad-for-business.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;bad for business.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over 180 CEOs, including Twitter&#8217;s Jack Dorsey, signed the letter, titled &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ban Equality,&#8221; which called on other companies to stand in support of abortion. &#8220;Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion, threatens the health, independence, and economic stability of our employees and customers,&#8221; the letter read. &#8220;Simply put, it goes against our values, and is bad for business. It impairs our ability to build diverse and inclusive workplace pipelines, recruit top talent across the states, and protect the well-being of all the people who keep our business thriving day in and day out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The misogynistic take was immediately criticized by pro-lifers, but one notable reply came from Rev. William Dailey, director of the Notre Dame-Newman Centre for Faith and Reason, in which he cut right to the heart of the issue:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: Area CEOs prefer abortion to maternity leave, call it feminism.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 William Dailey, CSC (@wrdcsc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wrdcsc\/status\/1138415127831752704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that executives would want to encourage their employees to choose abortion, rather than accommodate pregnancy; things like maternity leave and family-friendly policies are complicated and expensive. It&#8217;s so much easier and more cost-effective to just expect that women will go get abortions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sugar-daddy-pay-abortions\/\">Creepy: CEO of \u2018sugar daddy\u2019 website offers to pay for women\u2019s abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not unusual for pregnant employees to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-employees-punished-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punished<\/a> for having children, with a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/06\/15\/business\/pregnancy-discrimination.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times investigation<\/a> finding that \u201c[m]any of the country\u2019s largest and most prestigious companies still systematically sideline pregnant women. They pass them over for promotions and raises. They fire them when they complain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And after all, why should any employer bend over backwards to accommodate a pregnant employee, or encourage a family-friendly workplace, when abortion is available? There&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-feminism-injustices-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nothing feminist about it<\/a>, of course. But thanks to the abortion industry, feminism and abortion have become linked, and women have been fed a steady diet of lies for decades, told that abortion is empowering and allows them to achieve their goals and dreams. The reality is that abortion normalizes the male body as the business industry standard.
