While Republican lawmakers celebrated their efforts at property taxes and school finance reform, at least one pro-life group believes more should have been done in the way of pro-life legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The failure to pass pro-life laws at a time when other states around the country have made sweeping bans against abortion seems puzzling, especially as Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/super-bowl-session-produces-few-pro-life-victories\/?fbclid=IwAR28pBlchFsAFxyNZItP6aO3HB4CwTkImjZUfh8RSwqXP7GP05tTu0JjLKk\">claimed<\/a>, &#8220;We are clearly the most pro-life state in the country.&#8221; The legislative track record during this last session has caused some pro-lifers to question Patrick&#8217;s claim. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article230555679.html?ct=t(86th-session-wrap-up_short)\">Star-Telegram<\/a>\u00a0noted, &#8220;Texas Republicans this year have conspicuously stayed on the sidelines. They&#8217;ve instead let other conservative states lead efforts squarely aimed at the Supreme Court&#8217;s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-step-taxpayer-funded-abortions\/\">Texas moves one step closer to eliminating taxpayer-funded abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notably, it appears that representatives in the House failed to act on several bills which passed the Senate. Pro-life legislation that ultimately died included the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasrighttolife.com\/house-leadership-fumbles-life-issues-despite-pro-life-majority\/?ct=t(86th-session-wrap-up_short)\">following<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SB 1033\/HB 2434, the Preborn Nondiscrimination Act, would have put an end to late-term abortions in the state.<\/li>\n<li>SB 2089 \/ HB 3158 would have repealed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2019\/04\/30\/texas-committee-passes-bill-to-overturn-rule-allowing-hospitals-to-euthanize-patients-after-10-day-notification\/\">10-Day-Rule<\/a>, a current law which allows healthcare professionals to pull the plug on a patient after 10 days, even if the patient or family wishes to continue life-extending care.<\/li>\n<li>SB 1107 \/ HB 2892 would have enacted conscience protections for all healthcare professionals who object to abortion or anything related to abortion.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/super-bowl-session-produces-few-pro-life-victories\/?fbclid=IwAR28pBlchFsAFxyNZItP6aO3HB4CwTkImjZUfh8RSwqXP7GP05tTu0JjLKk\">HB 1500<\/a>, the Texas Heartbeat Bill, was filed in the House but stalled almost immediately, despite the fact that many other states have had great success with their own heartbeat bills this year.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/super-bowl-session-produces-few-pro-life-victories\/?fbclid=IwAR28pBlchFsAFxyNZItP6aO3HB4CwTkImjZUfh8RSwqXP7GP05tTu0JjLKk\">HB 896<\/a> would have outlawed abortion in the state.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/super-bowl-session-produces-few-pro-life-victories\/?fbclid=IwAR28pBlchFsAFxyNZItP6aO3HB4CwTkImjZUfh8RSwqXP7GP05tTu0JjLKk\">HB 3605<\/a> would have granted legal protections and <a href=\"https:\/\/rewire.news\/legislative-tracker\/law\/texas-lawyers-for-fetuses-bill-hb-3605\/\">representations<\/a> to preborn children in cases where a pregnant minor seeks judicial permission to get an abortion without parental consent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_203392\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203392\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-203392 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed-518x700.jpg\" alt=\"abortion, texas, pro-life bills\" width=\"518\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed-518x700.jpg 518w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed-768x1037.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed-500x675.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/unnamed.jpg 1291w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-203392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chart from Texas Right to Life pointing out failed pro-life TX legislation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasrighttolife.com\/house-leadership-fumbles-life-issues-despite-pro-life-majority\/?ct=t(86th-session-wrap-up_short)\">Texas Right to Life<\/a>\u00a0conveyed its belief that legislators were too busy shoring up support for next year&#8217;s election to care about the important issues at hand. But House Speaker Dennis Bonnen slammed the criticism of the pro-life organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/houston\/article\/House-Speaker-Bonnen-pours-water-on-Texas-GOP-s-13899364.php\">telling reporters<\/a>, &#8220;They aren&#8217;t worth responding to. If we passed every pro-life bill filed in the history of the state, they would say we had not done enough. You will never please or appease those folks and I\u2019m sure as hell not going to waste my time trying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While many pro-life bills failed to pass, there were some smaller victories worth noting.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-step-taxpayer-funded-abortions\/\">SB 22<\/a>, which prevents taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood or its entities passed both the Senate and the House and is headed to Gov. Gregg Abbott, who is expected to sign. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/super-bowl-session-produces-few-pro-life-victories\/?fbclid=IwAR28pBlchFsAFxyNZItP6aO3HB4CwTkImjZUfh8RSwqXP7GP05tTu0JjLKk\">HB 16<\/a>, the Texas Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, provides protections to those infants who are abortion survivors.
