\"\"<\/a>By now you\u2019ve probably heard about Missouri Rep. Todd Akin\u2019s absurd “legitimate rape” comments<\/a>, in which the Republican Senate candidate claimed that rape victims don\u2019t get pregnant because their bodies can \u201cshut that whole thing down.\u201d Democrats and abortion advocates have gleefully<\/a> exploited<\/a> the story to try<\/a> to<\/a> reinforce<\/a> the usual \u201cwar on women\u201d smears against pro-lifers.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no question as to the idiocy of Akin\u2019s remarks. Aside from the shocking tone-deafness it takes to say anything that even sounds like trivializing some rapes, it\u2019s not true<\/a> that rape victims don\u2019t get pregnant. Akin has issued one heartfelt-sounding apology<\/a>, but he’s still claiming<\/a> that \u201cone word\u201d was the entirety of his mistake. The damage has been done.<\/p>\n

Before pro-aborts declare victory, though, it must be said that these are among the last people in the United States with any standing to judge who takes rape seriously enough.<\/p>\n

First, the right\u2019s reaction has been virtually unanimous condemnation, including many calls to step down. A partial run-down of the conservatives and Republicans who\u2019ve blasted Akin includes presidential candidate Mitt Romney<\/a>, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus<\/a>, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair John Cornyn<\/a>, Missouri’s last five Republican senators<\/a>, Sen. Ron Johnson<\/a>, National Review<\/a><\/em>, Tea Party Express<\/a>, American Crossroads<\/a>, Rush Limbaugh<\/a>, Mark Levin<\/a>, Ann Coulter<\/a>, Michelle Malkin<\/a>, Sean Hannity<\/a>, Charles Krauthammer<\/a>, and Dennis Prager<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Can liberals honestly say they hold their own accountable to anywhere near the same degree? Hardly. As the American Spectator<\/em>\u2019s Ross Kaminsky notes<\/a>, Vice President Joe Biden recently told blacks in his audience that Republicans would \u201cput y\u2019all back in chains,\u201d yet Democrats – up to and including President Barack Obama – have refused to criticize Biden\u2019s malice or racial insensitivity.<\/p>\n

Second, as Live Action\u2019s Mona Lisa<\/a> and Sex Trafficking<\/a> projects have exposed, Planned Parenthood personnel at numerous locations have allowed the sexual abuse of minors to go unreported, and even helped cover it up – a scandal Akin\u2019s opponent, Claire McCaskill, has no interest in confronting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Third, liberal media figures have a nasty habit of fantasizing about conservatives getting raped and otherwise physically harmed: see, for instance, Bill Maher<\/a>, Sandra Berhnard<\/a>, Guy Cimbalo<\/a>, David Letterman<\/a>, Matt Taibbi<\/a>, Antonia Zerbisias<\/a>, Jane Hamsher<\/a>, Montel Williams<\/a>, Mike Tyson<\/a>, Bob Beckel<\/a>, Opie & Anthony<\/a>, Marc Maron, and Dan Savage<\/a>. Examples of less violent, but no less misogynistic, rhetoric about conservative women are alarmingly<\/a> numerous<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yes, liberals have condemned some of these attacks (that is, when the president of the United States doesn\u2019t roll out<\/a> the red carpet<\/a> for the offenders), but even when they do, they treat them as isolated incidents with only the speaker in question to blame, even as they characterize their foes\u2019 offenses as symptoms of a deeper disregard of women intrinsic to the conservative or pro-life movements as a whole.<\/p>\n

Fourth, the left often has a see-no-evil approach to their allies who commit<\/em> sexual abuse. As Ann Coulter chronicled<\/a> in her 2002 bestseller Slander<\/a><\/em>, the mainstream media lionized Sen. Bob Packwood and ignored his harassment of female staffers, turning on him only when Bill Clinton\u2019s ascension to the presidency rendered Packwood unimportant to preserving abortion. Speaking of Clinton, who can forget his respect for women, or his strategist James Carville\u2019s infamous response<\/a> to the harassment allegations against his boss: \u201cDrag a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park, you never know what you\u2019ll find\u201d? More recently, scores of enlightened<\/em> left-wing filmmakers rallied to the defense<\/a> of director Roman Polanski when he was accused of raping a minor. And of course, there are also various sex crimes among the Occupy Wall Street movement’s rap sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fifth, the farther left you go in abortion\/feminist circles, the more likely you are to encounter reverence for The Vagina Monologues<\/em>, a hallmark of modern feminist \u201cliterature\u201d which celebrates<\/a><\/em> the \u201cgood rape\u201d of a 13-year-old girl by a 24-year-old woman. If there\u2019s anything comparable to that on the pro-life side, I\u2019m all ears.<\/p>\n

Finally, consider that ignorance and insult may be occasional offenses of pro-life individuals, but for the pro-choice movement, they’re standard operating procedure. The standard pro-choice argument begins with sowing misinformation<\/a> about the basic scientific facts of embryology, and the default pro-choice premise is that pro-lifers are bad people who oppose abortion because we want to control women\u2019s sex lives and keep them subservient to men.<\/p>\n

When pro-life politicians like Todd Akin err, they should answer for it. But none of us should tolerate lectures about rape, women\u2019s dignity, or science from this band of hucksters and hypocrites. If pro-choicers really want to clean up American discourse on these issues, let them start in their own sleaze-ridden house.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
