They typically point to entirely fabricated <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-died-illegal-abortion-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numbers<\/a> of women who died from illegal abortions just prior to <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-professor-testifies-against-heartbeat-bill-using-bogus-debunked-abortion-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citing<\/a> a debunked statistic of between\u00a05,000 and 10,000 annually. A more recently cited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-debunked-thousands-abortion-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">number<\/a> claiming &#8220;thousands of women [are] dying from abortion every year,&#8221; dates all the way back to the 1940&#8217;s &#8212; <em>before antibiotics were invented<\/em>. These inflated numbers were created intentionally to garner sympathy for decriminalizing abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News has broken down this data in more detail <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/thousands-women-werent-dying-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-debunked-thousands-abortion-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debunking<\/a> Planned Parenthood&#8217;s false claims <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lying-planned-parenthood-debunked-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple<\/a> times. Here&#8217;s a summary of facts:<\/p>\n<p><u><b>1. Hundreds of thousands of women <em>did not<\/em> die from illegal abortions annually<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former NARAL founder Bernard Nathanson<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/february-21-2013-marks-two-year-anniversary-of-dr-bernard-nathansons-death\/?utm_content=62352017&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0that the 5,000 to 10,000 death figure fed to the public and media in the late 1960\u2019s was fabricated. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.2105\/AJPH.59.12.2131\">found<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frequently quoted figure of 5,000 \u2013 10,000 deaths from abortion annually appears unrealistic&#8230;.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1975 <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=BZYrAAAAYAAJ&amp;dq=morbidity+and+mortality+weekly+report,+abortion&amp;source=gbs_navlinks_s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine noted: &#8220;It is difficult to find credible estimates of the number of deaths associated with illegal abortion. One estimate, which has been frequently quoted, is between 5,000 and 10,000 deaths per year.\u00a0<em><strong>That is hardly plausible<\/strong><\/em>, considering that the total number of deaths of women aged 15-44 from all causes in the United States is approximately 50,000 annually, and\u00a0<em><strong>the total number of deaths due to abortion reported by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has been below 500 since 1958 and below 100 since 1971<\/strong><\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Others (see below) including abortion proponents, reveal illegal abortion death numbers drastically lower than what is regularly cited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-205752 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Illegal-Abortion-Deaths-1930-to-1979-UPDATEDB-June-2019-Live-Action-Graph.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"862\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Illegal-Abortion-Deaths-1930-to-1979-UPDATEDB-June-2019-Live-Action-Graph.jpg 862w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Illegal-Abortion-Deaths-1930-to-1979-UPDATEDB-June-2019-Live-Action-Graph-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Illegal-Abortion-Deaths-1930-to-1979-UPDATEDB-June-2019-Live-Action-Graph-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Illegal-Abortion-Deaths-1930-to-1979-UPDATEDB-June-2019-Live-Action-Graph-700x439.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Illegal-Abortion-Deaths-1930-to-1979-UPDATEDB-June-2019-Live-Action-Graph-500x313.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>2. The year Roe was decided, <em>legal<\/em> abortion killed more women than <em>illegal<\/em> abortion<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By 1973, abortion had already been legalized in several states. CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/data_stats\/index.htm\">reports<\/a>, which can be found in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/00041486.htm#00001660.htm\">table<\/a>, reveal that in 1973, the year the Supreme Court ruled in favor of abortion, more women died from \u201c<em>legal<\/em>\u201d abortion than \u201c<em>illegal<\/em>\u201d abortions. (25 v. 19)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-168537 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/CDC-Abortion-deaths-1972-to-1990.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/CDC-Abortion-deaths-1972-to-1990.jpg 462w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/CDC-Abortion-deaths-1972-to-1990-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">CDC Abortion deaths 1972 to 1990<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/legal-abortion-equals-more-proof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented that while legalizing abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/legal-abortion-equals-more-proof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resulted<\/a> in a drastic increase in abortions, it did not necessarily equate to safer abortions, especially in the first few years after Roe was decided. Even today, women are injured and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abortion911.com\/abortion-patient-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed<\/a> after seeking\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/brother-woman-died-planned-parenthood\/\">legal<\/a> <\/em>abortions<b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><u>4. No one knew exact illegal abortion death numbers, but acknowledged that numbers were inflated<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1967, statistician Christopher Tietze called the inflated numbers &#8220;unmitigated nonsense,&#8221; adding, \u201cwe have no real basis for guessing which extreme is closer to the truth.\u201d He then suggested that merely liberalizing abortion &#8220;probably would not have a big impact on mortality.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>In\u00a01969, the very first abortion surveillance report was published by the Centers for Disease Control, noting a \u201clack of accurate incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality data\u201d on abortion. According to this same CDC report, in 1966, the National Center for Health Statistics reported 189 maternal deaths from abortion complications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today, although the CDC reports <em>legal<\/em> abortion deaths, many believe they could be under-reported. Years ago, I was personally told by a medical examiner &#8220;off the record&#8221; that abortion deaths are &#8220;covered up regularly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b><u>5. Antibiotics decreased the number of Illegal abortion deaths<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guttmacher Institute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/gpr\/2003\/03\/lessons-roe-will-past-be-prologue\">writes<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that by 1950, \u201cjust over 300\u201d women died from illegal abortion, adding that it was most likely \u201cbecause of the introduction of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylearningsite.co.uk\/a-history-of-medicine\/antibiotics\/\">antibiotics<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 1940s, which permitted more effective treatment of the infections that frequently developed after illegal abortion.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><u>6. Small\u00a0percentage of women went to non-medical personal\u00a0for illegal abortions<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary S. Calderone, medical director of Planned Parenthood, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1373382\/pdf\/amjphnation00308-0022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1959<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhatever trouble arises usually comes after self-induced abortions, which comprise approximately 8 per cent, or with the very small percentage that go to some kind of nonmedical abortionist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><u>7. Physicians referred patients to colleagues for illegal abortions<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary S. Calderone, medical director of Planned Parenthood, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1373382\/pdf\/amjphnation00308-0022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1959<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Another corollary fact: physicians of impeccable standing are referring their patients for these illegal abortions to the colleagues whom they know are willing to perform them\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><u>8. Physicians committed the majority of illegal abortions<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Planned Parenthood president Alan Guttmacher, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1967\/12\/5\/parenthood-president-churchman-debate-reform-of\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Crimson December 5, 1967<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Seventy per cent of the illegal abortions in the country are performed by reputable physicians, each thinking himself a knight in white armor.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary S. Calderone, medical director of Planned Parenthood, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1373382\/pdf\/amjphnation00308-0022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1959<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Called abortion \u201cno longer a dangerous procedure,\u201d because it was being committed by physicians, saying \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;90 per cent of all illegal abortions are presently being done by physicians.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><u>9. Illegal abortions were often classified\u00a0as &#8220;therapeutic&#8221; (to save a woman&#8217;s life) so they could be done by doctors:<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary S.
