As a result of the regulation, medical professionals in the U.S. can refuse abortion, sterilization, euthanasia, and other procedures that would violate their consciences without being subject to discrimination, retribution, or coercion for abiding by their religious beliefs.\u00a0The rule also stipulates that all healthcare institutions that receive federal funding, including Medicaid and Medicare, must certify their compliance in writing to the federal government.\u00a0The reaction of pro-abortion activists and organizations was immediate, fierce, and in many cases bizarre &#8212; and, as usual, was based on misinformation to push the abortion agenda.<\/p>\n<p>In perhaps the most bizarre reaction, NARAL conjured up a rather far-fetched hypothetical scenario to incite fear among women using a condition that occurs in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2000\/0215\/p1080.html\">less than two percent of pregnancies<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Trump\u2019s new rule would even allow an ambulance driver to refuse to provide transportation for women with ectopic pregnancies\u2014a condition that can be fatal if not treated\u2014because the patient may need an abortion at the hospital to save their life. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PutPatientsFirst?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutPatientsFirst<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LgGEFWYQtn\">pic.twitter.com\/LgGEFWYQtn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NARAL (@NARAL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NARAL\/status\/1124036338334957568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Guttmacher Institute, pro-abortion think tank for Planned Parenthood, absurdly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Guttmacher\/status\/1123988115796918272\">complained <\/a>the rule protecting religious freedom &#8212; one of the most fundamental American rights &#8212; was too &#8220;broad\u201d: \u201c@HHSGov has claimed refusal regs were merely a \u2018clarification,\u2019 but their proposed rule would codify intentionally broad definitions or outright change the definitions of key terms to greatly expand the reach of existing laws. #PutPatientsFirst\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/medicare-for-all-destroys-medical-conscience\/\">\u2018Medicare-for-All\u2019 would erase conscience protections for doctors<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood president Leana Wen &#8212; despite the fact that abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-never-medically-health-care\/\">never medically necessary<\/a> and always results in the death of at least one &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrLeanaWen\/status\/1124073050608107521\">argued<\/a> that the rule would harm patients:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">When I became a doctor, I took an oath to take care of my patients &amp; provide the best medical care to them.<\/p>\n<p>In allowing doctors, nurses &amp; other healthcare providers to deny care to patients, this administration is providing legal cover for discrimination. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PutPatientsFirst?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PutPatientsFirst<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lkfuNLEMcH\">https:\/\/t.co\/lkfuNLEMcH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Leana Wen, M.D. (@DrLeanaWen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrLeanaWen\/status\/1124073050608107521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>NARAL also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ilhan\/status\/1124388294203146241\">retweeted<\/a> Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar\u2019s reaction, which falsely implies that abortion is healthcare: \u201cUnconscionable. This rule explicitly discriminates against women who need abortion care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Louise Melling, deputy legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union, used a <a href=\"https:\/\/m.cnn.com\/en\/article\/h_fc175d3b42e5c414e65afc24aaa2ff97\">similar line of argument<\/a> as Wen and Omar, saying in a statement: \u201cOnce again, this Administration shows itself to be determined to use religious liberty to harm communities it deems less worthy of equal treatment under the law. This rule threatens to prevent people from accessing critical medical care and may endanger people\u2019s lives. \u2026 Denying patients health care is not religious liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to the common complaint of discrimination, the HHS document points out, \u201c[Medical providers] who suffer discrimination on the basis of their religious beliefs or moral convictions, or those coerced to violate those convictions, may themselves experience emotional distress, as well as economic harms such as job loss or rejection from admission into a training program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In attempting to spread fear about the new rule, the Human Rights Campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC\/status\/1124018082140295170\">seemingly made no attempt to hide<\/a> their falsehoods: \u201cThe Trump-Pence administration will allow medical providers to deny lifesaving care to LGBTQ people.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">1\/ BREAKING: The Trump-Pence administration will allow medical providers to deny lifesaving care to LGBTQ people. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/putpatientsfirst?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#putpatientsfirst<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/X4p5NRjU7t\">https:\/\/t.co\/X4p5NRjU7t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Human Rights Campaign (@HRC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC\/status\/1124018082140295170?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">2\/2 This could be especially dangerous for trans &amp; non-binary people.<\/p>\n<p>Being denied critically necessary transition-related care extends &amp; exasperates increased incidences of depression &amp; substance abuse, as well as health complications caused by delaying care. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/putpatientsfirst?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#putpatientsfirst<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Human Rights Campaign (@HRC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC\/status\/1124018082966589446?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In reality, the HHS rule extensively addresses this and related objections numerous times throughout the document.
