Since then, many people have dropped the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/opinion-la\/la-ol-hillaryclinton-abortion-campaign-20160209-story.html\">rare<\/a>\u201d from their list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/other\/marching-orders-keeping-abortion-safe-legal-and-nobody-elses-business-your-own\">stated expectations<\/a>, but they have continued to proclaim that they are concerned about the safety of women getting abortions. In fact, a primary purported reason for keeping abortion legal has always been the prevention of do-it-yourself, \u201cback-alley\u201d procedures.<\/p>\n<p>In what could certainly be seen as a contradiction, some of these same people have petitioned to increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2018\/10\/women-on-web-safe-abortion-mail\/573322\/\">remove medical professionals<\/a> from the abortions themselves. Not only have these activists dodged efforts to hold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\">abortion centers<\/a> to the same standards as other medical facilities, but in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/5173789\/how-to-get-abortion-pill-canada-ultrasound\/\">Canada<\/a>, they have now legalized self-managed chemical abortions. Until now, patients were required to receive an ultrasound before being prescribed the abortion pills, but the government has done away with this mandate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSexual health advocates\u201d were quick to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/5173789\/how-to-get-abortion-pill-canada-ultrasound\/\">praise<\/a> this action, noting that it would remove a possible barrier to abortion for women who had difficulty scheduling an ultrasound. But what it has also removed is a vital safety check that keeps women likely to be harmed by the medication from taking it. So\u2026 what could go wrong?<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dangerous-self-abortion-pill-push\/\">What you should know about the dangerous \u2018self-managed\u2019 abortion pill push<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRDnVSMr5j0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Undiagnosed Ectopic Pregnancy\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nOne of the main reasons for the ultrasound requirement (currently still in place for the United States) is to rule out an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/ectopic-pregnancy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372088\">ectopic pregnancy<\/a>. In this life-threatening condition, the zygote implants in an improper and dangerous place, such as a fallopian tube or the abdominal cavity. Just as an ultrasound is part of regular prenatal care, it\u2019s essential even if a woman has chosen an abortion. Without an early ultrasound, she cannot be diagnosed, and she may experience the hemorrhaging and shock that can result from untreated ectopic pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Miscalculated Gestational Age\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nThe abortion pills are contraindicated after a certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/medical-abortion\/about\/pac-20394687\">point of pregnancy<\/a> (with the point depending on the type of pills), and without an ultrasound, women may easily miscalculate how far along they are. Taking the pills too late in pregnancy decreases their effectiveness and increases the risk of life-threatening complications.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a misjudged gestational age may affect a woman\u2019s decision to get an abortion. Some women are more opposed to the procedure later in pregnancy, and without an ultrasound, she will not have accurate information to make her decision.<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>So, Why Would Anybody Support This?\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nAgain, abortion advocates insist that they care deeply about women, but this latest step makes clear that safety is lower on their list of priorities than they imply. Furthermore, for people who tout their belief in choice for (and trust of) women, they seem remarkably unconcerned about making sure these women are making informed decisions. As they have so many times in the past, they have once again proven that their real goal is to protect their lucrative industry at any cost to others.
