On April 25th, Democrat presidential candidate Beto O\u2019Rourke claimed the nation\u2019s largest purveyor of abortion is responsible for saving lives<\/a>. He made the comments during a stop at the University of Nevada on his campaign tour last week. <\/span><\/p>\n

When a self-described Planned Parenthood supporter asked O\u2019Rourke how he would safeguard \u201csafe\u201d and \u201clegal\u201d abortion if he was elected president, he made a claim about \u201cthe lives that we are losing today in this country\u201d due to lack of access to abortion and the need for \u201ca woman\u2019s right to make her own decisions about her own body.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Rourke then highlighted how he thinks of Planned Parenthood as saving women\u2019s lives:<\/span><\/p>\n

As we shut down all these family planning clinics in my home state of Texas, we’ve made it so hard for women to just get any kind of healthcare at all, including access to a legal, safe abortion. \u2026 So when I connect the fact that family planning clinics, Planned Parenthood to be specific, in Texas is saving the lives of our fellow women, and it’s a life-and-death matter in this country — three times as deadly for women of color in this maternal mortality crisis that we have right now — I think I can find some common ground to ensure that we see the larger picture in our national public shared interest going forward.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

O\u2019Rourke fails to specify how Planned Parenthood, whose admitted\u00a0<\/span>core mission<\/span><\/a> is a <\/span>violent procedure<\/span><\/a> that always involves the death of the preborn baby and <\/span>sometimes injures or kills the mother<\/span><\/a>, saves women’s lives.\u00a0In 2017, its most recently reported year, Planned Parenthood <\/span>committed 332,757 abortions<\/span><\/a>. Planned Parenthood <\/span>does not perform mammograms<\/span><\/a>, and its basic cancer screenings have fallen <\/span>by a whopping 68% over 10 years<\/span><\/a>. On the contrary, Planned Parenthood has expanded from 197,070 abortions in 2000 to the 332,757 abortions it conducted in 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Democrat presidential candidate made no mention of the\u00a0<\/span>Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)<\/span><\/a> that operate at nearly 300 sites around Texas specifically for low-income and underserved communities. Additionally, O\u2019Rourke failed to mention anything about pregnancy resource centers that offer an array of professional — and free — medical, material, and emotional support to women.<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Rourke also omitted the fact that, in recent years, Texas abortion clinics have been beset by problems<\/a>. In 2016, 16 out of Texas\u2019 17 abortion facilities failed inspection, and one was fined $20,000. The abortion centers in the state have also come under fire for improperly disposing of fetal remains. In May of 2018, the FBI announced that it was investigating Douglas Karpen, an abortionist known as the \u201cTexas Gosnell,\u201d for multiple counts of infanticide<\/a>, and for the death of at least one woman.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the year, Beto O’Rourke came under fire<\/a> when, on another campaign stop, he proclaimed that because he “trusts women,” he does not support requiring life-saving measures for infants who survive abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n
