Some Twitter users have pointed out that the lecture slides, related to immunology, are merely pointing out how cancer can mimic a process like pregnancy to invade a human being&#8217;s body &#8212; but others believe the comparison to a &#8220;parasite&#8221; is a good example of completely unscientific pro-abortion propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture slide reads, &#8220;The fetus, a legitimate parasite&#8230; rapidly grows&#8230; invades&#8230; manipulates immunity of mother&#8230; reshapes blood vessels,&#8221; and goes on to list the similarity to a cancer: &#8220;The cancer: crashes the party!!!&#8230; rapidly grows&#8230; invades&#8230; manipulates immunity&#8230; reshapes blood vessels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">No joke, a friend just sent me this slide from her upper-level biology course.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m speechless. Create your own caption. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4sS6AvdRV1\">pic.twitter.com\/4sS6AvdRV1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dylan Griswold (@DylanPGriswold) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DylanPGriswold\/status\/1121506690644365312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 25, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Griswold commented in follow-up tweets, &#8220;The class title is &#8216;biology of disease&#8217; and as all &#8216;woke&#8217; medical students know, pregnancy is a disease. Abortion is the remedy,&#8221; and &#8220;The presentation was given by a professor in the school of medicine <a class=\"twitter-atreply pretty-link js-nav\" dir=\"ltr\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UCSanDiego\" data-mentioned-user-id=\"338660808\"><s>@<\/s><b>UCSanDiego<\/b><\/a> &#8230; not a student.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several Twitter users pointed out that the slide has nothing to do with abortion (see one response below). But the truth is, even though it doesn&#8217;t directly address abortion, it likens a growing human being in his mother&#8217;s womb &#8212; the exact place designed for him to grow &#8212; as an &#8220;invading parasite.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This has nothing to do with abortion: it&#8217;s an immunology course, and they&#8217;re describing the process of how the tumor mimics biological mechanisms that developed for supporting fetal growth. This allows the tumor to evade the immune system, enrich blood supply, engraft in tissue<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 c0nc0rdance (@c0nc0rdance) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/c0nc0rdance\/status\/1121572206583005184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A parasite is, by definition, of a different species than its host organism. Ideologues don&#8217;t get to redefine scientific terms to push their agenda. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic.com\/qa\/why-humans-are-not-parasites\">Catholic Answers<\/a>, Fr. Charles Grondin lays out a very logical (and entirely non-religious) list of reasons why a human being in the mother&#8217;s womb is not a parasite. He writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>A baby in the womb is not a parasite because:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The baby is of the same species as the host (the mother).\u00a0It is to the advantage of the human species that this relationship exist.\u00a0Therefore, the relationship is not a detriment.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Human mothers have a placenta that shares nutrients with the baby.\u00a0This is natural and normal and shows that the relationship between a mother and baby is symbiotic rather than parasitic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The placenta is produced by the mother\u2019s body for the purpose of nurturing a baby.\u00a0The human body does not produce anything to purposely feed parasites.
