According to his mother Jenna, his name means &#8220;little warrior&#8221; &#8212; and after he faced a difficult diagnosis, he proved he is exactly that. But his parents are also warriors in their own right.<\/p>\n<p>Logan was born with a cleft lip and palate, a separation of the skin on the top lip and the incomplete formation of the roof of the mouth. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/conditions-and-treatments\/conditions\/c\/cleft-lip-and-cleft-palate?_ga=2.99606937.668024248.1555119751-813271402.1555119751\">Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital<\/a>, one in every 700 babies is born with both like Logan was, and the condition is treatable, requiring surgeries to correct the problems. Still, it can be a frightening diagnosis for a parent to hear. That&#8217;s why his mother <a href=\"https:\/\/thriving.childrenshospital.org\/poem-logan-cleft-lip-palate\/?utm_campaign=FY19PlasticsBrand&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_content=thrivinglogan&amp;fbclid=IwAR1Ftwy4pGj90AzKoLutFj_hFDOScUlVPJwxtWTEdhFCivIhwGxrf84vTOk\">wrote a poem<\/a> sharing her fears and her hopes for her son. She writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here we sit in the quiet, in the middle of the night<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0I\u2019m cuddling, snuggling, holding you tight<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And I can\u2019t help but think of the journey we\u2019re on<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Of all of the bumps in a road that\u2019s quite long<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0The surgeries you\u2019ll face and the pain you\u2019ll endure<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And for what? Why\u2019d this happen? Of that I\u2019m not sure<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0We\u2019ve just barely started, there\u2019s so much time left<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0I think back to the day we first heard the word \u201ccleft\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0It seems like just yesterday, but also so long<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Since we sat in that room and found out what was wrong<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0There were tears, there was fear, there were feelings so mixed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And all people said was, \u201coh that can be fixed\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0I worried so much about how you would feed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And would I be everything that you would need?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Would I see you the way I saw your sister and brother?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Would I be all that you needed and more in a mother?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And don\u2019t get me wrong, I know there\u2019s much worse<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0But I grieved you, my last baby, not able to nurse<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Would we have the same bond? Would you love me as much?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Would you feel just as safe in the hands of my touch?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0But with you here in my arms now, sleeping sound on my chest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0You\u2019ve managed to put all my worries to rest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0You are everything I needed and more in a son<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And for that I am grateful, I feel like I\u2019ve won<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0You have taught me so much in such a short time<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0And to put it quite simply, you\u2019re the best thing that\u2019s mine<\/p>\n<p>Facing a child&#8217;s diagnosis is incredibly difficult, but when that child is still in the womb, some parents struggle even more. In fact, back in 2016, word spread that the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3761905\/Fury-number-abortions-cleft-lip-babies-rises-new-womb-tests-offered.html\">British babies<\/a> aborted because of a cleft lip or palate had risen dramatically. From 2011 to 2012 to the number of preborn British children killed for this reason was four. In 2015, 11 children were aborted for a cleft lip or palate. From 2011 to 2016, a total of 30 babies were aborted for the treatable condition.<\/p>\n<p>When Church of England curate, the Reverend Joanna Jepsen, learned that a 28-week viable preborn child was aborted because of a cleft palate she called for the doctor who committed the abortion to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/curate-loses-legal-challenge-over-cleft-palate-abortion-t00p2hbj3r2\">prosecuted<\/a>. And when Matt Martin&#8217;s son Cam was born with a cleft palate in 2018 in Texas, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovewhatmatters.com\/my-friend-said-come-on-of-all-people-you-should-understand-why-someone-would-want-to-abort-a-cleft-baby\/\">friend told him<\/a>, &#8220;Come on, of all people, you should understand why someone would want to abort a cleft baby.&#8221; It&#8217;s discrimination, and as Jepson said, it &#8220;shows just how far we are from being the humane and tolerant society we claim to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But little Logan and his mom are showing the world that cleft palate or not, life is worth living.
