Immediately following the incident, the Spanish man, \u00c1ngel Hern\u00e1ndez, turned himself into police custody. His wife, Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Carrasco, 62, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 30 years ago. His actions have reignited the debate over euthanasia in Spain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pQtKTlUhhBs\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dramatic, public, and exploitative act of assisted suicide has become a flashpoint in Spanish politics and society especially ahead of the April 28th elections. Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez of Spain, of the Spanish Socialist Workers&#8217; Party (PSOE), leads a minority government that has thus far been blocked from implementing its proposed euthanasia legislation; however, he vowed to renew his push for it. &#8220;Having seen these images, I feel absolutely overwhelmed, moved, but I must say that I\u2019m also in part outraged, because this should have been avoided,&#8221; Prime Minister S\u00e1nchez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/05\/world\/europe\/spain-euthanasia.html\">said in reaction to the video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Spanish Bishops\u2019 Conference, Mons. Luis Arg\u00fcello, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciprensa.com\/noticias\/muerte-provocada-nunca-es-la-solucion-dice-vocero-de-obispos-espanoles-38084\">asserted<\/a> that \u201cinduced death is never the answer, neither in the case of abortion nor euthanasia.\u201d Acknowledging that the situation was \u201cexceptionally emotionally charged,\u201d Mons. Arg\u00fcello reiterated the evils of assisted suicide, while also pointing out that the Church supports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciprensa.com\/noticias\/muerte-provocada-nunca-es-la-solucion-dice-vocero-de-obispos-espanoles-38084\">palliative care to ease suffering in difficult cases<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m not saying anyone in this case should go to prison,&#8221; he said in a press conference, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/medical\/article\/Spain-Judge-releases-man-in-suspected-assisted-13743946.php\">My San Antonio<\/a>. &#8220;What I&#8217;m saying is we have to provide support for all options other than the view that death is the solution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The exploitative video is divided into two scenes filmed on consecutive days in early April 2019. In the first part, Hern\u00e1ndez asks his wife a series of questions. \u201cDo you still continue with the idea that you want to commit suicide?\u201d he asks his wife. \u201cYes,\u201d she replies. \u201cDo you know that I have to assist you, that there is nobody who can assist you?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d she responds again. \u201cToday is the 2nd of April, 2019. \u2026 Would you like me to prepare it and that we do it tomorrow?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d she replies. \u201cOkay, well there is nothing more to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/people-disabilities-terminal-illnesses-assisted-suicide\/\">People with disabilities and terminal illnesses speak out against assisted suicide<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The video\u2019s second part, filmed on April 3rd, consists of Hern\u00e1ndez standing by his wife\u2019s bedside during her final moments. \u201cMar\u00eda Jos\u00e9, the moment has arrived that you so desire. I am going to give you my hands. That is what you are not able; I am going to give you my hands.\u201d He first begins by administering water to her to ensure she can swallow. \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d she responds. \u201cI will give it to you then,\u201d he says. \u201cAre you decided?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d she replies one last time. He then administers a fatal dosage of the the pentobarbital drug.<\/p>\n<p>The video, posted by Spanish outlet El Mundo, fades to a black screen before she takes the fatal sip. Text appears on the screen: \u201cSeconds later, Mar\u00eda dies. El Mundo has preferred not to publish these images.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez is currently being tried for assisted suicide and may also be tried for gender-based violence due a recent Supreme Court ruling in Spain that defined all violence perpetrated by males against females within a separate category.
