A series on abortion training published <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?s=innovating+education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> by Live Action News introduced readers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovating-education.org\/2016\/03\/2771\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovating Education<\/a>, a UCSF abortion training program by the\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"disclosure\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0which also includes a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/papayaworkshop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Papaya Workshop<\/a>,&#8221; which uses Papayas to simulate abortion. The fruit model, while sharing many characteristics of a\u00a0uterus, does not mimic some anatomical features such as the tone of the cervical os or the attachments to the uterus. This may limit teaching of anatomy and cervical dilation, for example.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/126154980\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A separate UCSF\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/papayaworkshop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Revision.-Papaya-Workshop-Facilitator-Guide_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">document<\/a> reminds instructors to emphasize that, &#8220;[p]apaya is a fruit, not a muscle\/organ,&#8221; and &#8220;is not connected to anything,&#8221; such as:<\/p>\n<p>a) blood supply<br \/>\nb) nerves<br \/>\nc) ligaments<br \/>\nd) peritoneum\/broad ligament<br \/>\ne) fallopian tubes<br \/>\nf) vagina<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_207601\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207601\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-207601\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Aspiration-abortion-Papaya-workshop.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Aspiration abortion Papaya workshop\" width=\"640\" height=\"470\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-207601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aspiration abortion Papaya workshop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite this, the simulation is gaining traction in various places including New York City, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prh.org\/updates\/meet-our-advocates-dr-zoey-thill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortionist<\/a> Zoey Thill\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/3k334w\/how-to-do-an-abortion-with-manual-vacuum-aspiration-papaya-workshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0to a Vice reporter why the papaya is a desired simulator: &#8220;The narrow part of the papaya, where the stem would be, is like the cervix, she said. The broader portion of the papaya is like the upper area of the uterus known as the fundus\u2014and it&#8217;s that part we would want to avoid puncturing with our tools when, in just a few minutes, we would practice performing an aspiration abortion on our own papayas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thill demonstrated the abortion procedure, which Vice described:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>When the papaya was fully \u201cdilated,\u201d she placed a plastic tube called a cannula inside and <a href=\"http:\/\/papayaworkshop.org\/workshop-teaching-resources\/setting-up-the-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attached<\/a> it to a manual vacuum aspirator, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X8Dw0expAs8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic, syringe-like device<\/a>, sucking out the inner contents of the papaya: what, for our purposes, was the pregnancy. From start to finish, the procedure had taken no more than three minutes. Thill admired the seeds in the plastic tube.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The use of the fruit seemingly makes light of a procedure which takes the life of a preborn human in the womb.<\/p>\n<p>Sickeningly, Thill stated to Vice after finishing the simulation, &#8220;It\u2019s even more satisfying when it\u2019s a real abortion.\u201d She added,\u00a0&#8220;The more I can minimize the way we think of this as a \u2018dangerous\u2019 procedure, the more people will have better abortion experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But using a piece of fruit is beyond an oversimplification of the procedure, and <em>papayas don&#8217;t hemorrhage<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_207600\" style=\"width: 665px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-207600\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-207600\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Abortion-provider-Zoey-Hill-Papaya-Workshop.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion provider Zoey Hill Papaya Workshop (Image: Twitter) \" width=\"655\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Abortion-provider-Zoey-Hill-Papaya-Workshop.jpg 655w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Abortion-provider-Zoey-Hill-Papaya-Workshop-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Abortion-provider-Zoey-Hill-Papaya-Workshop-500x221.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-207600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion provider Zoey Hill Papaya Workshop (Image: Twitter)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to Vice, Thill, hoped &#8220;participants might capture some of the buoyant energy they felt while extracting seeds from fruits and use it to undo some of the seriousness and reverence we\u2019ve placed around the procedure.&#8221; She also hoped to hold the events for &#8220;people providing underground abortions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>UCSF&#8217;s Innovating Education program also suggests various melons to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovating-education.org\/2016\/03\/multiple-module-simulation-of-dilation-and-evacuation-facilitation-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simulate<\/a>\u00a0later D&amp;E abortion techniques. The simulation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovating-education.org\/cms\/assets\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Multiple-Module-Simulation-of-DE-Costescue.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">document<\/a>\u00a0demonstrates how training abortionists involves dehumanizing preborn children, stating how &#8220;learners extract a fetal model from a hollowed melon. The fetal calvarium is simulated with a clay-covered egg and limbs are simulated with dried pasta and pepperoni sticks (to reflect various stages of bone calcification). Mushroom is used to simulate placenta.
