{"id":198698,"date":"2019-03-27T16:20:49","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T21:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=198698"},"modified":"2020-05-15T13:56:04","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T18:56:04","slug":"secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/","title":{"rendered":"The secrecy surrounding the abortion pill&#8217;s maker and influential financial investors must end"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In part <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dangerous-self-abortion-pill-push\/\">one<\/a> of this two-part series, Live Action News reported on how the abortion industry is seeking to loosen the way the abortion pill is allowed to be distributed, and is pressuring the FDA to alter its Risk Evaluation Management Strategy (REMS) which currently only allows the abortion pill to be &#8220;ordered, prescribed, and dispensed by \u2014 or under the supervision of \u2014 a hospital or clinic healthcare provider who meets certain qualifications.&#8221;\u00a0The abortion industry is seeking to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct clinical trials to prove the abortion pill, RU486 &#8211; a.k.a. Mifeprex, is safe for pharmacy and mail order dispensing.<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cder\/rems\/index.cfm?event=IndvRemsDetails.page&amp;REMS=35\">REMS<\/a><\/u> under Mifeprex.<\/li>\n<li>Filing lawsuits to force the FDA to remove Mifeprex from <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cder\/rems\/index.cfm?event=IndvRemsDetails.page&amp;REMS=35\">REMS.<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is only part of the problem. Another issue is that the abortion pill&#8217;s manufacturer itself is incredibly secretive about its stakeholders and controlling parties, which (from the limited information we <em>can<\/em> glean) appear to stand to gain financially from a broad abortion pill expansion.<\/p>\n<p>Through their Packard Foundation, philanthropists\u00a0David and Lucile Packard (yes, the ones whose names many have seen in association with supporting public television programming) have been long-time investors in\u00a0Danco Laboratories, LLC, the company that now manufacturers the abortion pill in the United States. Packard not only helped to seed Danco&#8217;s beginning, but also now funds projects that could result in pressuring the FDA to lift important safety regulations so the pill can be sold across multiple online platforms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_191477\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191477\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191477\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Packard-Founation-invested-in-abortion-pill-manufacturer-DANCO.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Packard Foundation invested in abortion pill manufacturer DANCO (Image: David and Lucile Packard Foundation )\" width=\"1070\" height=\"449\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-191477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Packard Foundation invested in abortion pill manufacturer DANCO (Image: David and Lucile Packard Foundation )<\/p><\/div>\n<p>More conflicts of interest and connections among those pushing this expansion are listed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. DANCO, the abortion pill&#8217;s manufacturer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_191499\" style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191499\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191499\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Abortion-Pill-Manufacturer-DANCO-LLC.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion Pill Manufacturer DANCO LLC (Image: DANCO website)\" width=\"483\" height=\"165\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-191499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion Pill Manufacturer DANCO LLC (Image: DANCO website)<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Set-up by the eugenics-founded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Population Council,<\/a>\u00a0which is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/population-council-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> by Packard.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/\">Packard<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everycrsreport.com\/files\/20010223_RL30866_c6c423f682c56ed7c586755595c02d5202ddf6bd.pdf\">financed<\/a> DANCO.<\/li>\n<li>Additional investors in DANCO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everycrsreport.com\/files\/20010223_RL30866_c6c423f682c56ed7c586755595c02d5202ddf6bd.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Soros<\/a>\u00a0(Open Society Foundation),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/archive\/news\/2006\/NRL07\/BuffettDonation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warren Buffett<\/a>\u00a0(Buffett Foundation) and the California-based\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/community.seattletimes.nwsource.com\/archive\/?date=20001119&amp;slug=TTUJ2CJCR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kaiser Family Foundation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><u>Shrouded in secrecy<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the Washington Post (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/AA_ru486-foia.pdf\">2000<\/a>), the FDA \u201ctook the unprecedented step of <b>refusing to disclose the name or location of the manufacturer<\/b>\u201d of the abortion pill.<\/li>\n<li>The Washington Post (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/2000\/10\/12\/drugs-us-marketer-remains-elusive\/8b7b732b-0f23-4c96-9051-714cd3d9f6f8\/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.a41163e953ba\">2000<\/a>) also reported that the &#8220;agency broke with precedent by <b>not publishing the names of the experts who reviewed RU-486 <\/b>for the agency.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The LA Times noted (<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2000\/nov\/05\/news\/mn-47330\">2000<\/a>), &#8220;Danco <b>refuses to release the names of its executives and investors<\/b>. The company even persuaded the Food and Drug Administration to <b>keep secret the location of the factory where the abortion drug will be produced<\/b>\u2026. The FDA acceded to Danco&#8217;s request that the name of its manufacturer be kept secret &#8212; and even shielded the names of the FDA researchers who had overseen the pill&#8217;s approval.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. The Packard Foundation, a large investor in the abortion pill:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1998, Packard <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeded<\/a> DANCO with $10 million. Packard\u2019s investment in the company included a $14 million loan as early as 1996 to bring the drug to the U.S., as well as additional grants made in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/2008_statement_20_pages_26-465.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2000,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foundationsearch.com\/990\/ARCHIVE\/9\/DAVID%20AND%20LUCILE%20PACKARD%20FOUNDATION%202004%20942278431.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2004,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/990s.foundationcenter.org\/990pf_pdf_archive\/942\/942278431\/942278431_200912_990PF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2009.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Packard Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/\">funded<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposed-conflicts-interest-abortion-pill\/gynuity-funded-by-population-control-organizations\/\">studies<\/a> (in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/can-we-trust-new-study-claiming-women-certain-about-abortions\/\">Journal Contraception<\/a>) that claim self-managed abortion and reversing REMS is safe; the conflict of interest as an abortion pill investor was not noted.<\/li>\n<li>Packard currently also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/gynuity-health-projects-llc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funds<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-pushing-home-abortions\/\">Gynuity Health Projects,<\/a> which conducts abortion pill <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/archive\/NCT00994734\/2009_10_13\">clinical trials.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_191514\" style=\"width: 741px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191514\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191514\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DANCO-Investors-2000.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion Pill MFG DANCO Investors 2000 (Image: New York Times 9\/30\/2000)\" width=\"731\" height=\"524\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-191514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion Pill MFG DANCO Investors 2000 (Image: New York Times 9\/30\/2000)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dangerous-self-abortion-pill-push\/\">What you should know about the dangerous \u2018self-managed\u2019 abortion pill push<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Daniel Grossman, abortionist and author of multiple abortion\/abortion pill studies:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grossman has a previous association with DANCO<\/li>\n<li>He is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/this-abortionist-claims-abortion-pill-doesnt-need-regulations-hes-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entrenched<\/a>\u00a0in the abortion industry.<\/li>\n<li>Grossman is a professor at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.ucsf.edu\/san-francisco-general-hospital\/daniel-grossman-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of California, San Francisco<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/this-abortionist-claims-abortion-pill-doesnt-need-regulations-hes-wrong\/\"> previously<\/a>\u00a0documented that Grossman is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/staff-members\/daniel-grossman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Director<\/a>\u00a0of Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH)<\/li>\n<li>He is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prochoiceamerica.org\/about\/board-of-directors\/\">NARAL board member<\/a>. Journal Contraception:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Journal and its authors are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/can-we-trust-new-study-claiming-women-certain-about-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deeply embedded<\/a> in the abortion industry.<\/li>\n<li>The Journal published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(18)30478-5\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> claiming there is large public interest in expanding distribution of abortion pill by lifting safety requirements on the drug. University of California, San Francisco (UCSF):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UCSF trains abortionists (<a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/training\/training\/kenneth_j_ryan_training.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>These programs are funded in part by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/regents-of-the-university-of-california-san-francisco-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Packard<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>6.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-pushing-home-abortions\/\">Gynuity Health Projects:<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gynuity conducts abortion pill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/archive\/NCT00994734\/2009_10_13\">clinical trials<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/gynuity-health-projects-llc-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/gynuity-health-projects-llc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Packard<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Gynuity <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181130073835\/http:\/\/gynuity.org\/about\/partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partners<\/a> with Packard and the Population Council, both invested in DANCO.<\/li>\n<li>It was founded in 2003 by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180613202151\/http:\/\/gynuity.org\/about\/staff\/winikoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beverly Winikoff, M.D<\/a>. 400;\">Contributors for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarahealthfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/RHIA_InvestmentCase.pdf\">strategy<\/a> included\u00a0<\/span>Lana Dakan from Packard, Daniel Grossman, and\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Kohn, who is the National Director of Research for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/what-we-do\/investigations\/abortioncorporation\/\">Planned Parenthood Federation of America<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>THF&#8217;s founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/TaraHealthFoundation\/posts\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attends<\/a> Packard-funded events.<\/li>\n<li>Packard, TARA Health, and others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/24950\/chapter\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a>\u00a0a National Academy of Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog\/24950\/the-safety-and-quality-of-abortion-care-in-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review<\/a>\u00a0which claimed abortion was safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For almost 20 years, with the blessing of the FDA and Clinton Administration at that time, the abortion pill&#8217;s manufacturer has been permitted to function in secrecy with its location and investors&#8217; information hidden from the public.<\/p>\n<p>It is past time for the FDA to remove the veil of secrecy from DANCO, so that financially motivated conflicts of interest
