The\u00a0UNFPA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/gender-biased-sex-selection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that &#8220;126 million<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0women and girls were missing in 2010 due to gender-biased sex selection, which can include, for example, excess female mortality and prenatal sex selection.&#8221; In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WpPItLcwwcA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>, Anna Higgins, Esq., Associate Scholar with Charlotte Lozier Institute, <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/sex-selection-abortion-the-real-war-on-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> that figure to actually be &#8220;in excess of 160 million<\/span>, with sex-selective abortion playing a major role.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Research conducted by the Population Research Institute (PRI) estimated that approximately 24 million abortions for reasons of\u00a0sex-selection occurred globally\u00a0between 2000 and 2014. \u201cOur figure of 24 million only refers to girls who were aborted because of their gender. It does not include abortions of females motivated by economic pressure, a conception from rape, incest, or any other factor other than the infant\u2019s gender,\u201d PRI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pop.org\/project\/stop-sex-selective-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> on their website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about the United States?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortions in the United States are committed for any reason, including for reasons of sex selection. Despite claiming to be for &#8220;women&#8217;s rights,&#8221; the abortion industry refuses to support banning sex-selective abortions, in legislation known as <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WpPItLcwwcA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PRENDA<\/a>. Live Action&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/what-we-do\/investigations\/sex-selective-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undercover investigations<\/a> into American abortion facilities found that sex-selective abortion is easy to obtain. Below is an example from a Planned Parenthood facility in Austin, Texas:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U2H3ZDnBtuw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Anna Higgins, with the Lozier Institute told Live Action News that because of<\/span>\u00a0inadequate abortion reporting requirements, &#8220;we are unable to get a complete picture of the extent of the sex-selective abortion problem.&#8221;\u00a0Live Action News has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fraction-abortions-rape-incest-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> how few states require abortion providers to report &#8220;reasons&#8221; the abortion was obtained.<\/p>\n<p>According to Higgins, there is reason to believe sex-selective abortions take place. &#8220;Companies are now advertising services for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasivf.com\/preimplantation-genetic-diagnosispreimplantation-genetic-screening-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preimplantation<\/a> genetic diagnosis [PGD] for the purposes of sex-selection, which is called &#8216;family balancing.&#8217;\u201d Clinics and companies even advertise blood tests as early as 7 to 10 weeks gestation so that if the baby is the &#8220;wrong&#8221; sex, he or she can be aborted in the first trimester. Higgins points out that currently there are no prohibitions on technology for the purpose of sex selection, which can easily be used to discriminate against either sex.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio Reproductive Medicine&#8217;s website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohioreproductivemedicine.com\/fertility-treatments\/pgs-pgd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claims<\/a> PGD &#8220;offers benefits&#8221; in &#8220;gender balancing&#8221; cases, saying, &#8220;[S]ome families can have more children of one specific gender. With PGD and gender selection, our&#8230; team can help couples achieve a more even family balance.&#8221; After ORM identifies the gender, &#8220;The patient is&#8230; offered the opportunity to choose XX (girl) or XY (boy) embryo for implantation&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_198030\" style=\"width: 699px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198030\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-198030 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Ohio-Reproductive-Medicine-Family-Balancing-Sex-Selection-abortion.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Ohio Reproductive Medicine Family Balancing Sex Selection abortion (Image: ORM website accessed March 8, 2019) \" width=\"689\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Ohio-Reproductive-Medicine-Family-Balancing-Sex-Selection-abortion.jpg 689w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Ohio-Reproductive-Medicine-Family-Balancing-Sex-Selection-abortion-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Ohio-Reproductive-Medicine-Family-Balancing-Sex-Selection-abortion-500x448.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-198030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ohio Reproductive Medicine Family Balancing Sex Selection abortion (Image: ORM website accessed March 8, 2019)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Higgins warns that sex-selection may not be obvious in certain populations until the third birth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The overall boy-girl sex ratio of Caucasian-Americans is 1.05 in comparison to Asian-Americans at 1.03 \u2013 both within normal range. Thus, some opponents of sex-selection bans claim that sex-selection is not a problem in the U.S. among Asian communities because the overall ratio is normal,&#8221; said Higgins. &#8220;Their macro analysis misses the point (of the Almond\/Edlund study) \u2013 that son-preference is clearly evident in these communities, but that it manifests itself in third births.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sex-selection\/\">History of sex-selection abortion and its impact today<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such opposition implies that we should make it our policy to confront sex discrimination on principle only when it affects a certain threshold number of people. The implications of this stance are that, as a nation, we should be concerned with prenatal sex-discrimination only when the problem becomes so extreme that the birth ratios match those of other countries with extreme bias,&#8221;\u00a0Higgins added.<\/p>\n<p>Higgins continued, &#8220;Evidence would suggest that families who have had two previous daughters and who come from communities that traditionally favor sons will most likely feel pressure to give birth to a son at some point in their lives, even if they reside in a free society. Heritage and deeply-ingrained cultural practices cannot be easily discarded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite known cultural pressures, the abortion industry does little to thwart the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Although outspoken abortionist Leah Torres claims she has never been asked to commit a gender-based abortion, she seemed reluctant to condemn them, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeahNTorres\/status\/1102283131346915331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a> on Twitter, &#8220;Maybe if we started treating girls like equal members of society, people would stop choosing to avoid giving birth to them&#8230;. I don\u2019t understand how you think the misogyny in our culture is separate from your claim of \u201csex-selective abortion.\u201d When asked more specifically about sex-selection abortions, Torres <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeahNTorres\/status\/1102396737111711745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replied<\/a>, &#8220;I do what is medically indicated: an abortion if someone is pregnant and doesn\u2019t want to be.
