The Kansas City Star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article226832584.html#storylink=cpy\">reported<\/a> that &#8220;Republicans used the &#8216;heartbeat&#8217; bill, which bans abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be heard, as the vehicle for a series of additional restrictions that each drew vigorous objections from Democrats.&#8221; House speaker Elijah Haahr summed up the provisions of the bill in a tweet that read &#8220;If a fetal heartbeat is detected, an abortion is prohibited&#8230;. An abortion is prohibited if the baby has reached the age where it can feel pain&#8230; Prohibits selective abortions in the cases of sex, race, or down-syndrome diagnosis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Kansas City Star notes that the bill &#8220;establish[es] a so-called &#8216;trigger clause&#8217; that would completely ban abortion, except in the case of a medical emergency, [in] Missouri if Roe v Wade is overturned by the Supreme Court.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/trump-promises-veto-legislation-weakens-protection-human-life\/\">Trump vows to veto legislation \u2018that weakens the protection of human life\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MoLeg?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MoLeg<\/a> just perfected the strongest pro-life bill in the country. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WeStandForTheUnborn?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WeStandForTheUnborn<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/J8QIWWDSO6\">pic.twitter.com\/J8QIWWDSO6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elijah Haahr (@elijahhaahr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elijahhaahr\/status\/1100522836505100295?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 26, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Washington Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2019\/feb\/27\/missouri-abortion-bill-126-called-strongest-pro-li\/\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWe watched what happened to New York and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/virginia-gov\/\">Virginia<\/a>, and it was somewhat of a call to action,\u201d Missouri House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/elijah-haahr\/\">Elijah Haahr<\/a> told The Washington Times in a telephone interview. \u201cThe goal of this underlying bill is to protect the unborn in this state.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Haahr, an attorney, also told the Times that he had &#8220;studied abortion laws that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit had struck down because they were not explicit about the state\u2019s interest in protecting life.&#8221; House Bill 126 contains, according to Haahr, &#8220;a significant amount of legislative findings, which multiple attorneys have told us is where other state abortion laws are falling short.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/arkansas-ban-abortion-roe-overturned\/\">previously reported<\/a> by Live Action News, with regard to so-called &#8220;trigger laws&#8221; that would go into effect if Roe v.
