{"id":195392,"date":"2019-01-31T12:47:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T18:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=195392"},"modified":"2019-01-31T15:31:28","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T21:31:28","slug":"faith-leaders-new-york-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/faith-leaders-new-york-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith leaders publicly denounce New York&#8217;s &#8216;demonic&#8217; abortion law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The recently passed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-nixes-protections-preborn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reproductive Health Act in New York<\/a>, which has expanded the state\u2019s abortion law to allow\u00a0third trimester abortion and even infanticide and repeal protections for abortion survivors, has galvanized Christian and Jewish leaders to remarkably vociferous and public reactions.<\/p>\n<p>Russell Moore, president of the Ethics &amp; Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, claimed that \u201cthe new abortion bill is alarming in every sense,\u201d according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpnews.net\/52299\/ny-abortion-bill--alarming-in-every-sense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baptist Press<\/a>. Pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, Dr. Jack Graham,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/shameful-and-demonic-5-pastors-faith-leaders-condemn-ny-abortion-law.html?page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a> in a statement to the Christian Post: \u201cThat this law was received with such exuberance by so many people should spur us to action, realizing that it has never been more important to defend the sanctity of human life and to fight for those who cannot defend themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Yesterday, we witnessed a raucous celebration in the chamber of the New York State Senate over the passage of a barbaric and expansive new abortion bill. Here&#8217;s what we can learn from that: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eucBmPZjRH\">https:\/\/t.co\/eucBmPZjRH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Russell Moore (@drmoore) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drmoore\/status\/1088141983992942599?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Carl Lentz, pastor of Hillsong NYC and prominent Christian leader in the city, said that \u201cthe only way I can describe where we are and where this is all headed&#8230; is evil, shameful and demonic,\u201d according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BtHL9bdBJoV\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram post<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t use those words lightly, but they are applicable here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Countless lay Catholics\u00a0have called for New York Governor Cuomo &#8212; who had the audacity to publicly cite Pope Francis and his Catholic faith while calling for the abortion bill to be passed by the State&#8217;s House and Senate &#8212; to be excommunicated. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, has publicly condemned the law and criticized Cuomo, but the cardinal has thus far <a href=\"https:\/\/relevantmagazine.com\/current\/ny-cardinal-dolan-wont-excommunicate-gov-andrew-cuomo-over-abortion-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resisted calls to excommunicate Cuomo<\/a>, calling it &#8220;counterproductive.&#8221; Other Catholic bishops <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2019\/01\/excommunicate-cuomo\">and canon lawyers<\/a>, however, have been more vocal.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Someone asked me today if I would issue an excommunication of a Catholic Governor under my jurisdiction if the Governor did the same as in New York. Franklin Graham, son of the late Rev.
