The March for Life in Paris, a non-denominational and non-partisan event, is the largest annual pro-life gathering in Europe, and the number of attendees continues to grow. In 2009, a reported <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20091221164438\/http:\/\/enmarchepourlavie.fr\/node\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20,000 people<\/a> came to march. Francois, a 20-year-old man with Down Syndrome, addressed the crowd. \u201cI have a heart like you,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I am like you. I love life! My life is beautiful, even with Trisomy 21. I ask you always to protect the weakest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People with Down syndrome are routinely targeted for eugenic abortion, especially in Europe. In France in 2015, the abortion rate after a diagnosis of Down Syndrome was reported as 77%. In many parts of the European Union, it\u2019s much closer to 90%. In Iceland, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/iceland-isnt-eradicating-down-syndrome-it-is-killing-every-person-who-has-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost 100%<\/a>, with just one or two children born with the condition each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-down-syndrome-un-extinction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woman with Down syndrome addresses UN: Stop targeting us for extinction<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The March for Life in Paris began in 2005, as French pro-life organizations came together to protest 30 years of legalized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion<\/a>. It is held on or around the January 18th anniversary of the legalization of abortion in France. Hitherto, <a href=\"https:\/\/enmarchepourlavie.fr\/2019\/01\/16\/la-marche-des-exclus-du-grand-debat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bioethical and social issues<\/a> have been excluded from what has been called \u201cthe great national debate.\u201d The March hopes to change that, as yellow vest protesters joined the pro-life march.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Argentina figured prominently in the March, as senator Mario Fiad, president of the Health Commission, attended and addressed the March. In August, the Argentinian senate <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/international-abortion-pressure-argentina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted against the legalization of abortion<\/a>, despite international pressure. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europe1.fr\/societe\/des-milliers-danti-avortement-manifestent-a-paris-3842231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strong showing of Argentinians<\/a> traveled for the gathering, wearing handkerchiefs in <a href=\"https:\/\/enmarchepourlavie.fr\/2019\/01\/10\/une-marche-pour-la-vie-2019-aux-couleurs-de-largentine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the color of the Argentinian flag<\/a>, festooned with pro-life slogans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/france-bans-positive-down-syndrome-video-because-it-may-disturb-post-abortive-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France bans positive Down syndrome video because it may \u2018disturb\u2019 post-abortive women<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis, himself a native of Argentina, <a href=\"https:\/\/enmarchepourlavie.fr\/2019\/01\/07\/le-pape-francois-soutient-la-marche-pour-la-vie-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addressed the March<\/a> through the Papal Nuncio, saying, \u201cAll the evil done in the world can be summed up in contempt for life.\u201d He encouraged the participants to \u201cbear witness to the inalienable values of human dignity and human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>France has around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.fr\/20170123\/thousands-take-to-paris-streets-to-march-against-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">220,000 abortions<\/a> per year.
