{"id":194433,"date":"2019-01-17T11:38:48","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T17:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=194433"},"modified":"2019-01-16T22:34:38","modified_gmt":"2019-01-17T04:34:38","slug":"npr-miscarriages-back-door-abortion-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/npr-miscarriages-back-door-abortion-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"NPR uses painful miscarriages as back-door abortion pill promotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although purportedly about easing the pain of women experiencing miscarriage, NPR&#8217;s piece, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2019\/01\/10\/666957368\/a-drug-that-eases-miscarriages-is-difficult-for-women-to-get\">A Drug That Eases Miscarriages Is Difficult For Women To Get,<\/a>\u201d actually reveals a thinly-veiled attempt to use miscarriage as a way to make the abortion pill more widely available, aligning with the abortion industry&#8217;s trend of promoting dangerous DIY abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The piece opened with the sad reality of a woman who, shortly after discovering she was pregnant, was devastated to discover she lost her baby.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said she chose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the abortion pill<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to help complete her miscarriage because its availability in her home country of Canada would help reduce her interaction with doctors and allow the process to complete at home, where she could grieve.\u00a0Mifepristone (brand name Mifeprex), the first pill in the abortion pill protocol, is a progesterone-blocking agent. In a first trimester medical abortion, mifepristone is the drug that causes fetal death. After this, misoprostol (also known as RU-486) is taken to cause contractions. <a href=\"\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21477682\">Studies show<\/a> that the combination of the two drugs makes a successful abortion more likely than using misoprostol alone. <em>(Note: An <a href=\"http:\/\/abortionpillrescue.com)\">abortion may be able to be halted\/reversed<\/a> if measures are taken quickly and if mifepristone alone has been taken.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRDnVSMr5j0\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When using it to manage a miscarriage where the baby has already died, mifepristone works to soften the cervix and make the uterus more responsive to the misoprostol, thus shortening the length of time it takes for the miscarriage to complete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the FDA sets conditions for the administration of mifepristone. Because of the potential for serious complications of an incomplete miscarriage, the chances of which increase the later in pregnancy the protocol is given, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders\/ucm492705.htm\">mifepristone is restricted to certain doctors who are able to give appropriate follow-up care to patients<\/a>. Doctors must register through REMS and can only administer to patients after an examination to determine whether the patient meets the criteria for prescribing it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mifepristone cannot be prescribed in, for example, an urgent care setting.\u00a0If the patient\u2019s miscarriage is incomplete for any reason and some\u00a0portion of the baby or placenta is in the uterus, a potentially life-threatening infection could result and\u00a0<\/span>a surgical procedure would be necessary, according to the FDA and others. Additionally, if a patient\u2019s baby has implanted outside the uterus in an ectopic pregnancy, she is not a candidate for mifepristone. While ectopic pregnancies are rare, life-threatening complications are probable if managed improperly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-probes-mail-abortion-pill-diy\/\">As FDA probes mail-order abortion pill company, groups promote DIY abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NPR author cites a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, as well as the American Medical Association and &#8212; against its own guidelines &#8212; the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists\u2019 (ACOG). &#8220;The FDA restrictions on mifepristone are motivated by politics, not science,&#8221; Julia Kaye, the lead attorney of the lawsuit, is quoted as saying.\u00a0According to the ACOG&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/Clinical-Guidance-and-Publications\/Practice-Bulletins\/Committee-on-Practice-Bulletins-Gynecology\/Medical-Management-of-First-Trimester-Abortion\">own guidelines<\/a>, however, upper gestational age and intrauterine (e.g. not ectopic) pregnancy must be established, necessitating a visit to an appropriate medical facility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mifepristone is not the only drug with this kind of restriction on who can take it or prescribe it. The acne drug Accutane has even more stringent restrictions, along with its specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/aboutfda\/transparency\/basics\/ucm325201.htm\">Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS)<\/a> called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipledgeprogram.com\/iPledgeUI\/home.u\">iPLEDGE<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.suboxonerems.com\/\">Buprenorphine,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.qsymiarems.com\/\">Qsymia<\/a>, and many other drugs with varying uses have their own REMS programs. The FDA, which approved mifepristone in 2000, does not appear to be highly responsive to the pro-life agenda. In fact, it\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/fda-updates-recommendations-for-abortion-pill\/2016\/03\/30\/426407de-f681-11e5-8b23-538270a1ca31_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.a41fa260df3c\">recently relaxed guidelines on mifepristone<\/a>, reducing the number of visits necessary, and reducing the dosage.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>With all the weight of this evidence that mifepristone is appropriately restricted, there can be little doubt that NPR&#8217;s thrust is not to help women during miscarriages but to encourage the availability of abortion drugs for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/telemedicine-could-help-fill-the-gaps-in-americas-abortion-care\/\">self-managed, first trimester abortions<\/a>, especially for women in what have been called called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2018\/10\/19\/658172697\/legal-battle-over-missouri-clinic-could-foretell-abortion-fights-in-other-states\">&#8220;abortion deserts&#8221;<\/a> with no nearby abortion facilities &#8212; a cherished goal of the pro-abortion lobby.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While pro-lifers have no problem with easing women&#8217;s pain through medically managed miscarriages, the push to make an appropriately-scheduled drug more widely available through inappropriate care appears to be a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/what-back-alley-these-women-say-diy-abortion-can-be-empowering\">trend<\/a> towards \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jezebel.com\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-self-managed-abortion-1830471836\">self-managed abortion<\/a>\u201d that abortion advocates <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-tweets-diy-abortion-safe\/\">push for<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/07\/12\/628237428\/abortion-rights-advocates-preparing-for-life-after-roe-v-wade\">in the fear that abortion may one day become illegal<\/a>. However, with a push towards making the drug more available, using the pain of miscarrying women as a kind of a human shield, will ultimately put more women\u2019s lives in danger \u2014 as well as
