{"id":193660,"date":"2019-01-04T12:01:06","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T18:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=193660"},"modified":"2024-09-20T16:04:23","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T21:04:23","slug":"debunking-christian-argument-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/debunking-christian-argument-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Debunking the so-called &#8216;Christian&#8217; argument in favor of abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>On November 16, 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforlife.org\/2018\/12\/27\/christian-seminary-professors-promote-abortion\/?fbclid=IwAR38nyjHgQJBiw9HSUlj-vsAZpAARCOFtJhwMgIOqNT7WZnlN1TgLo4vU0c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iliff Theological Seminary in Denver hosted a talk<\/a> called \u201cWomen, Religion and Choice.\u201d The talk was billed as a way for \u201ctwo nationally-regarded religious scholars,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cas.gsu.edu\/faculty-spotlight\/dr-monique-moultrie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Monique Moultrie<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rebeccatoddpeters.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Rebecca Todd Peters<\/a>, to \u201cexplore women\u2019s rights and abortion rights from a faith-based perspective.\u201d But their argument, called &#8220;Christian,&#8221; cleanly breaks from millennia of Christian tradition (prohibitions against abortion are found in the Didache, circa 140 AD) and lacks a basis in objective morality or reality.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PBcK8dTXTCY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event<\/a> was co-sponsored by the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), which ironically describes itself as \u201cpro-faith, pro-family, and pro-choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CORCRC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CORCRC<\/a> last night, 2 feminist theologians \u2014 @Mmoultrie2 and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/toddiepeters?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@toddiepeters<\/a> \u2014 discussed how we change the narrative about abortion &amp; focus on women\u2019s agency in their sexual lives despite messages from inside faith communities such as the Black church. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/950Wcv9TO0\">pic.twitter.com\/950Wcv9TO0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 RCRC (@RCRChoice) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCRChoice\/status\/1063897047722483712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Peters, a Presbyterian Minister and Religious Studies Professor, specifically proposed \u201ca Christian counter-narrative of abortion.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/rebecca-todd-peters-trusting-women-to-make-abortion-decisions-is-a-christian-norm\/17731853\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Peters<\/a>, \u201cThere is nothing Christian about requiring women to \u2018justify\u2019 their reasons for abortion. \u2026 If we truly value women and healthy families, we must accept that \u2018I do not want to have a baby\u2019 is an imminently appropriate reason to end a pregnancy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The core of her argument seemed to hinge on the exercise of free will as a good in itself, divorced from any end, which must be affirmed no matter what is chosen. Christianity, she claims, requires us to support a woman&#8217;s decision to abort &#8212; to \u201ctrust women.\u201d This was encapsulated by a quote from Moultrie: \u201cIf we believe in a God that manifest himself for us, we must also believe in moral agency. To deny this moral agency or privilege for only a few I think actually diminishes the God we claim to worship.\u201d But far from diminishing \u201cthe God we claim to worship,\u201d turning away from evil and repenting of sin is a requirement of the Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-christian-compassion-killing-babies\/\">Abortionist believes he practices \u2018Christian compassion\u2019 by killing babies<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Merely calling an argument \u201cChristian\u201d does not, in fact, make it so.\u00a0The exaltation of free will as an end in itself would completely re-write the doctrine of original sin and erase the need for salvation, and thus the Incarnation, effectively negating Christianity as a religion. A requirement to avoid evil and choose good does not actually deny moral agency. The heart of free will in Christian teaching is that human beings are free to choose good or choose evil, and are called but not compelled to choose\u00a0values consistent with the Gospel. The narrative of the fall of man in Genesis 3, and the consequences of original sin by Adam and Eve&#8217;s free choice of <em>disobedience<\/em>, is indisputably central to the Judeo-Christian tradition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/a-christian-argument-for-abortion-a-qa-with-rebecca-todd-peters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peters claims to espouse<\/a> a form of \u201cprogressive Christianity\u201d where she interprets \u201csocial teachings\u201d to \u201caddress the social problems we see in the world.\u201d Peters\u2019s approach to Christianity rejects a relationship with Christ to be solely about social justice. \u201cI actually don\u2019t care that much about salvation. That\u2019s not my primary concern. My primary concern is about the world that we live in, and how we make a more just world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For a \u201csocial gospel\u201d to be truly Christian, however, it must be based on the totality of the Gospel. Without Christ&#8217;s death and resurrection, Christianity can be reduced a social club or, as Pope Francis once described it, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/pope-the-church-is-about-christ-its-not-an-ngo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a mere NGO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CFZDhM5Gwhk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even apart from Christianity, the need for law and order in society shows that respecting a choice simply because it is a free choice, and divorced from the end that is chosen, would result in social and moral anarchy. Furthermore, her argument contradicts the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute\u2019s own research on the reasons many women choose to have abortions \u2014 the majority of which do not result from a woman&#8217;s own \u201cmoral agency.\u201d Abortion is often a tragic, circumstance-laden choice for a woman. Three-quarters of women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/induced-abortion-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited<\/a> \u201cthe inability to afford raising a child; and the belief that having a baby would interfere with work, school or the ability to care for dependents,\u201d and half reported problems with, or lack of, husband or partner as reasons they chose abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The unraveling of Christian morality as taught by a credentialed professor in a seminary\/theological institution should cause more than a little alarm. Unfortunately, other Christian institutions of higher learning have given aid and comfort to the abortion agenda. In 2017, RCRC <a href=\"http:\/\/rcrc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/RCRC_2017_Annual_Report-web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnered with<\/a> Auburn Seminary, a professor at Marquette University, and a professor at Professor at Starr King School of Ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Additionally, in March 2018, Pacific Lutheran University hosted an event organized by the Planned Parenthood-affiliated group, the 1 in 3 Campaign, <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforlife.org\/2018\/02\/09\/christian-university-sponsors-pro-abortion-event-planned-parenthood-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">featuring students boasting about their abortion stories<\/a>. The manifesto of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1in3campaign.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 in 3 Campaign<\/a> is to \u201cend the stigma and shame women are made to feel about abortion.\u201d The University of Notre Dame has conferred its highest honor, the Laetare Medal, on pro-abortion public figures to include Catholics who contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church on abortion, like Vice President Joe Biden in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion advocacy at Judeo-Christian institutions of higher learning and theological formation is rooted in the kind of language <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orwell.ru\/library\/essays\/politics\/english\/e_polit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Orwell notes<\/a> is designed to &#8220;make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On November 16, 2018, Iliff Theological Seminary in Denver hosted a talk called \u201cWomen, Religion and Choice.\u201d The talk was billed as a way for \u201ctwo nationally-regarded religious scholars,\u201d Dr. Monique Moultrie and Dr. Rebecca Todd Peters, to \u201cexplore women\u2019s rights and abortion rights from a faith-based perspective.\u201d But their argument, called &#8220;Christian,&#8221;
