{"id":193005,"date":"2018-12-21T14:57:38","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T20:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=193005"},"modified":"2018-12-20T20:31:58","modified_gmt":"2018-12-21T02:31:58","slug":"italy-90-percent-doctors-refuse-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/italy-90-percent-doctors-refuse-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"In parts of Italy, 90 percent of doctors refuse to commit abortions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Elective abortion has been legal in Italy for four decades, but, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ireland-abortion-conscience-protections\/\">unlike many countries<\/a> with legal abortion, the law recognizes the rights of health care workers to opt out of committing abortions as conscientious objectors.\u00a0The Local Italy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20180525\/history-abortion-laws-italy-doctors-objection-pills\">reports<\/a> that, according to health ministry figures in 2005, 58.7 percent of gynecologists refused to commit abortions, and in 2016, that number had grown to <em>more than 70 percent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-abortion gynecologist Silvana Agatone explained the extent of conscientious objection to PRI\u2019s The World, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2018-12-18\/abortion-legal-italy-most-doctors-refuse-perform-them\">saying<\/a>, \u201cFor example, in the public University of Rome, we have more than 60 doctors but only two provide abortion, only two.\u201d\u00a0In some areas of the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2018-12-18\/abortion-legal-italy-most-doctors-refuse-perform-them\">90 percent<\/a> of doctors refuse to commit abortions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/majority-doctors-ireland-unwilling-abortions\/\">Survey: Majority of doctors in Ireland refuse to commit abortions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion activists blame \u201cfar-right\u201d political groups for the growing number of conscientious objectors and blame the government for not keeping more pro-abortion doctors and nurses on staff at all public hospitals. According to The World, \u201cAgatone says her goal is to make sure Italy&#8217;s current abortion law is enforced.\u201d However, the law allowing for elective abortion does not have the power to compel doctors to end the lives of preborn babies. The fact remains that abortion is unlike any other medical procedure because <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-not-surgeries-killing\/\">abortion takes a human life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While abortion activists claim that high rates of conscientious objectors endanger women\u2019s health, abortion is actually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ysl1tRnk-ig\">never necessary to save the life<\/a> of the mother.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ysl1tRnk-ig\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Italy\u2019s high rate of conscientious objectors demonstrates the need for strong conscience protections. According to a previous report from Live Action News, Ireland recently <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Updated-General-Scheme-of-the-Health-Regulation-of-Termination-of-Pregnancy-Bill-2018.pdf\">passed<\/a> legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/people-ireland-shocked-details-new-abortion-bill\/\">allowing elective abortion for any reason up to the 12<sup>th<\/sup> week of pregnancy and up to birth in certain circumstances<\/a>. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irish-lawmakers-ignore-conscience-rights\/\">the outcry from the pro-life groups<\/a> and medical professionals, legislators refused to protect the conscience rights of medical workers in a vote of 29-4.<\/p>\n<p>With the rollout of taxpayer-funded elective abortion in the national health service of Ireland, it is not yet known how the new regulations will affect pro-life doctors and nurses.
