(Pregnancy Help News<\/a>)\u00a0Over the years, college campuses have grown a notorious reputation for being over-zealous echo chambers that suppress free speech\u2014particularly that of conservative and pro-life students who don\u2019t toe the pro-abortion line.<\/p>\n

So it\u2019s surprising when a school does just the opposite and protects the rights of students who disagree with abortion radicals.<\/p>\n

This month, the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz did just that.<\/p>\n

In a refreshing move that pro-choice politicians should take note of, the school stood by its relationship with a life-affirming pregnancy help center\u2014The Bravo Center<\/a>\u2014defending its presence on campus and opting for neutrality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must remain viewpoint neutral and even handed when we make determinations [regarding guests],\u201d Mike Patterson, student activities and union services director, told the school paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we had a Planned Parenthood, then it is only fair to have The Bravo Center,\u201d Patterson said. \u201cIt protects the interests of those students that might want this. That means you\u2019re going to have different viewpoints and ideologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dispute began when the school\u2019s International Socialist Organization (ISO)\u00a0discovered<\/a> \u201cthere is not one accessible reproductive health care center for women within the area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, when the group did an online search for \u201cabortion\u201d or \u201cfemale healthcare\u201d in New Paltz, Google directed them to The Bravo Center, otherwise known as the Pregnancy Support Center of Ulster County, which has two locations nearby.<\/p>\n

Outraged, ISO concocted a predictably misleading\u00a0<\/strong>opinion column<\/a> for the college paper and orchestrated a protest<\/a> at the pregnancy center\u2019s New Paltz location.<\/p>\n

Parroting the incendiary rhetoric of the abortion lobby, the group\u2019s stated purpose<\/a> was to \u201cexpose this fake clinic and demand the right to safe, accessible abortions\u201d\u2014a \u201cright\u201d that the pregnancy help center, of course, has no influence over.<\/p>\n

But as outrageous as ISO\u2019s goal is, it certainly gets to the heart of why abortion advocates consider pregnancy help centers to be \u201cfake clinics\u201d: They simply don\u2019t provide abortion.<\/p>\n

Going back to the group\u2019s original Google query, the group said, \u201cA quick Google search reveals that reproductive health care is barren in the town.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oddly enough, my quick Google search revealed that there is at least one OB-GYN office<\/a> within a 6-minute drive from the SUNY New Paltz campus.<\/p>\n

One has to wonder if even the offices of regular OB-GYNs would be considered \u201cfake clinics\u201d under the abortion lobby\u2019s excessively narrow definition of what it means to be a \u201creal clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n

And how interesting that in a town that is supposedly \u201cbarren\u201d of any reproductive health care, a group of \u201creproductive health care\u201d advocates would protest one of the few outposts offering any help to pregnant women whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Established in 1986, The Bravo Center provides pregnancy tests, options counseling, abortion recovery support groups, community referrals, and material resources such as diapers to those in need\u2014all free of charge. They\u2019re even anticipating offering ultrasound, with hopes to bring a medical director and nurse on board in the near future.<\/p>\n

This spring, The Bravo Center\u2019s director was granted the chance to meet with clients on the SUNY campus once a week for eight hours. As she told the college paper, they don\u2019t plan on leaving anytime soon.<\/p>\n

The Bravo Center\u2019s persistence in the face of the students\u2019 outrage is admirable, as is the university\u2019s defense of its students\u2019 interests and the pregnancy center\u2019s first amendment rights.<\/p>\n

While New York and other city and state governments have targeted the rights of pregnancy help centers<\/a>\u2014even after the Supreme Court struck down<\/a> one such law this June\u2014at least this college is brave enough to entertain different viewpoints.<\/p>\n

Indeed, considering the overly-sensitive political climate that has forsaken so many institutions of higher learning, SUNY New Paltz deserves major applause.<\/p>\n
