Wade<\/em>. But what many have noticed is that the CDC&#8217;s number is significantly lower than the actual total of abortions in the U.S. Here&#8217;s why.<\/p>\n<p>Both the\u00a0CDC and the private Guttmacher Institute publish national abortion totals; however, the numbers are vastly different. Live Action News has previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/\">explained<\/a>\u00a0some of the reasons for the variation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The CDC gathers information from states which require reporting. The CDC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/67\/ss\/ss6713a1.htm#T1_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admits<\/a>\u00a0that \u201calthough reporting to CDC is voluntary, most reporting areas provide their abortion numbers.\u201d California, Maryland, and New Hampshire <strong>do not<\/strong> report their numbers to the CDC.<\/li>\n<li>Guttmacher\u00a0gathers its\u00a0figures from surveys which it claims it\u00a0sends directly to <strong>all known abortion facilities<\/strong>, categorized by type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, laws regulating who reports are not consistent across the nation but are governed by the states. Some states (like California) do not have any requirement to report abortions at all, while others report on a host of categories with regard to abortion numbers. This makes for a great deal of inconsistency in abortion reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News generally quotes Planned Parenthood&#8217;s abortion market share based on the more complete published abortion totals from the Guttmacher Institute, which is what leads us to estimate Planned Parenthood&#8217;s total abortion market share at approximately 35%,\u00a0which makes the abortion chain the largest single abortion vendor in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5THDmys8z30\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/\">Six things you should know about how abortion statistics are reported<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What statistics from both agencies show, though drastically different, is that while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/half-planned-parenthoods-non-government-services-revenue-comes-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">profitable<\/a>\u00a0abortions are on a steady decline nationally, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s percentage of the abortion market share seems to have been on a steady increase over the past decade or so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CDC<\/strong>: In 2014, 652,639 abortions were reported to the CDC from 49 reporting areas, excluding California, Maryland, and New Hampshire. In 2015, the number of abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-abortions-decline-lowest-roe\/\">decreased to 638,169<\/a>\u00a0for the same reporting areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guttmacher:\u00a0<\/strong>The former \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\">special affiliate<\/a>\u201d of Planned Parenthood annually (usually each January) publishes significantly higher and more complete abortion totals than those reported by the CDC. Guttmacher has not yet published its abortion totals for 2015. It did, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/fb_induced_abortion.pdf\">report<\/a>\u00a0926,200 abortions for 2014, according to statistics published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/induced-abortion-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January of 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood: <\/strong>Planned Parenthood&#8217;s annual reports include its total number of abortions. Those reports usually come out at the end of each year, but the most recent report for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/71\/53\/7153464c-8f5d-4a26-bead-2a0dfe2b32ec\/20171229_ar16-17_p01_lowres.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016-2017<\/a>\u00a0wasn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-2016-women-dont-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> until February of 2018.
