October 17, 2018 (National Campus Life Network<\/a>) \u2013 By 17 weeks everyone knew we were having a baby.
\nFamily and friends had delighted in our news.
\nWe were so in love with our little baby.
\nI wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

My midwife couldn’t find the heartbeat at my routine check-up.
\nWhat followed were the longest two hours of my life.
\nBut thanks to friends and family praying for me, I wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

My husband met me for the ultrasound.
\nI felt sick.
\nNot the pregnancy kind of sick that I had felt daily for so many weeks of the pregnancy.
\nThat other kind of sick.
\nThat kind where your heart and your brain keep smashing into each other until they both feel numb.
\nThere he was on the screen.
\nPerfectly formed.
\nNo heartbeat.
\nMeasuring 12 weeks.
\n“What were your dates again?”
\nThen it hit me. Hard.
\nFor six weeks I had been carrying a dead child.
\nI had waited weeks for kicks.
\nNow I knew why they hadn’t come.
\nBut he was mine, resting inside.
\nI wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

My husband and I looked at each other.
\nI remember feeling sorry for the ultrasound technicians as they awkwardly mumbled sweet words, handed us Kleenex, and left.
\nWe cried together. How could we tell our other children?
\nWas I even capable of holding their grief, so overwhelmed by my own?
\nThey knew the moment we walked in the door.
\nWe sat down in a huddle of love and tears.
\nI wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

His story goes on.
\nIt got complicated.
\nAfter nearly six weeks my “missed miscarriage” likely required an induction or a D&C.
\nThe age of my baby meant that the doctors at the nearest hospital wanted me to come in and have the D&C.
\nMy emotional needs after going through nearly half the pregnancy meant I wanted the chance to hold my child.
\nNo matter how small. I had seen his image on that screen.
\nHis arms.
\nHis legs.
\nI wanted to kiss him.
\nTo delight in him.
\nI fought for an induction with the help and support of some amazing friends and family, and a midwife who knew what I needed and was ready to fight with me.
\nI wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

And so, three days later I got into a different hospital.
\nThe drug to induce my labour was the abortion pill.
\nWhen my husband picked it up from the pharmacy he was asked, “Is this for an abortion?”
\nIt was literally the hardest pill I have ever had to swallow.
\nBut my sister calmed my nerves as I called her crying from the bathroom.
\nAnd my husband was with me through it all.
\nHis heart swallowed that pill too.
\nI wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

After waiting 24 hours I was given a second dose.
\nA few hours later labour started.
\nThis was not my first child.
\nOr even my first miscarriage.
\nBut it was the first time my body would have to labour so hard for nothing.
\nBut then, it wasn’t nothing, was it?
\nI had fought to deliver my child.
\nAnd here I was, supported and held up.
\nSo I worked.
\nIt wasn’t very long.
\nThe waves that came were familiar to me.
\nI danced through my contractions with my baby.
\nJust as I had with his siblings.
\nTwo bodies on the same mission.
\nHis soul was speaking to me.
\nI wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

And so he came.
\nWe cried and we laughed.
\nDiscovered our baby was a boy!
\nTook photos.
\nTried to kiss his paper-thin skin.
\nMore than anything I wanted to snuggle him close and squeeze my baby.
\nYou know, when you bring in a newborn and sniff their head\u2026
\nBut he was far too fragile and delicate for that.
\nSo we held him in the palm of our hands and told him how much we loved him.
\nThe doctors and nurses were kind and so respectful.
\nThere was a reverence in the room that was palpable.
\nAll for our little boy. His soul had left six weeks before, but we saw him.
\nAcknowledged him.
\nLoved him.
\nHe wasn’t alone.<\/p>\n

And neither are you.<\/p>\n

We could count each finger as his hands lay across his chest.
\nAt 12 weeks they truly are a perfectly formed human.
\nOnly physical difference from us is their vulnerability.<\/p>\n
