Feinstein makes false claim on abortion deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>When even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/california\/articles\/2018-09-05\/ap-fact-check-democratic-senator-misstates-abortion-deaths\">mainstream media<\/a> calls out a pro-abortion senator, you know the error must be huge. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s happening to Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), after she made an outrageously erroneous claim about the number of abortion deaths prior to the 1973 <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> decision legalizing abortion nationwide. Yesterday, at Senate hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Feinstein stated, &#8220;In the 1950s and 60s, the two decades before Roe, deaths from illegal abortions in this country ran between 200,000 and 1.2 million. That\u2019s according to the Guttmacher Institute.&#8221; Only&#8230; <em>it isn&#8217;t<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SibWKG46ySU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">A spokeswoman for Sen. Feinstein, Ashley Schapitl, said Feinstein &#8220;meant to cite just the number of illegal procedures, not deaths,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/onpolitics\/2018\/09\/05\/kavanaugh-confirmation-feinstein-illegal-abortion-number\/1206409002\/\">according to USA Today<\/a>. While it is certainly possible that Feinstein misspoke, it wouldn&#8217;t be out of the norm for an abortion proponent to fabricate statistics on abortion deaths prior to <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-abortion-clinic-director-clinics-hide-complications\/\">READ: <em>Former abortion clinic director: Clinics hide their complications<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Quite regularly, pro-abortion individuals claim that thousands of women died from abortion before it was legal. Numbers given usually range from 5,000-10,000 annually. But even this much smaller number than Feinstein&#8217;s is <em><strong>completely false<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; and the men who fed that number to the media have admitted it. Still, this complete lie persists, and is trotted out regularly by supporters of legal abortion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Live Action News&#8217; Carole Novielli <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-died-illegal-abortion-roe\/\">writes<\/a> of Dr. Bernard Nathanson, founder of the pro-abortion group NARAL (later, a pro-life convert), who was the source of the falsified figure:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In his book, \u201cThe Abortion Papers,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/february-21-2013-marks-two-year-anniversary-of-dr-bernard-nathansons-death\/?utm_content=62352017&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\">Dr. Nathanson<\/a>\u00a0admitted that the 5,000 to 10,000 death figure which was fed \u201cto the public and the media in the late 1960\u2019s,\u201d was fabricated because it was a \u201cnice, round, shocking figure.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nathanson added, &#8220;There were perhaps 300 or so deaths from criminal abortions annually in the United States in the sixties, but NARAL\u2026 claimed to have data that supported a figure of five thousand.&#8221; Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/gpr\/2003\/03\/lessons-roe-will-past-be-prologue\">concurs<\/a> with the 300 figure.<\/p>\n<p>Novielli <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/thousands-women-werent-dying-abortion\/\">notes in a different article<\/a> that while &#8220;In 1930, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/gpr\/2003\/03\/lessons-roe-will-past-be-prologue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a>\u00a0claimed\u00a0abortion was the &#8216;official cause of death for almost 2,700 women,'&#8221; that number continued to plummet &#8212; largely attributed to &#8220;the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940s,&#8221; and by 1965 was down to &#8220;approximately <strong>193<\/strong>&#8221; annually &#8212; well before Roe v. Wade was forced upon the nation in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, those so-called &#8220;back alley&#8221; illegal abortions that we so often hear about were actually done by&#8230; drumroll, please&#8230; &#8220;reputable physicians.&#8221; (The &#8220;back-alley&#8221; phrase actually refers to the back entrances of physicians&#8217; offices used by women seeking illegal abortions.) Novielli writes, &#8220;Past Planned Parenthood president Alan Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/1973-video-former-planned-parenthood-eugenicist-president-responds-roe\/\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1967\/12\/5\/parenthood-president-churchman-debate-reform-of\/\">Harvard Crimson<\/a> in 1967 that &#8216;Seventy per cent of the illegal abortions in the country are performed by reputable physicians, each thinking himself a knight in white armor.'&#8221; This claim was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/thousands-women-werent-dying-abortion\/\">supported<\/a> by Planned Parenthood&#8217;s then-president, Mary Calderone.<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/illinoisfamily.org\/life\/dianne-feinsteins-big-fat-abortion-lie\/#.W5A2d5uPbXc.facebook\">noted<\/a> in response to Feinstein&#8217;s comments:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The number of (accidental) deaths of women caused by illegal abortions in the 1950s and 1960s doesn\u2019t come close to 200,000, let alone 1.2 million. Compare the number of actual deaths of women from illegal abortions in the 1950s and 1960\u2019s to the almost 61 MILLION intentional killings of humans in the womb since 1973, or the almost 630,000 humans intentionally killed in the womb just this year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bHe8YGPGzj4\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unsafe-indiana-judge-abortion-complications\/\">READ: <em>Unsafe: Judge halts Indiana law requiring reporting of abortion complications<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As for the illegal abortions themselves (<em>not<\/em> the deaths from such procedures), those numbers are not actual, but estimates. Abortion proponent Larry Lader wrote in his 1966 book, &#8220;Abortion,&#8221; that a 1957 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1373382\/pdf\/amjphnation00308-0022.pdf\">conference<\/a> of experts sponsored by Planned Parenthood Federation <em><strong>estimated<\/strong><\/em> that US abortions could run from 200,000 to 1,200,000 annually,&#8221; prior to nationwide legalized abortion. [HT: Carole Novielli]<\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/onpolitics\/2018\/09\/05\/kavanaugh-confirmation-feinstein-illegal-abortion-number\/1206409002\/\">claims<\/a>\u00a0abortion deaths pre-Roe may have been much higher than &#8220;officially reported&#8221; numbers, yet seems oblivious to the fact that, with only <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-dangerous-abortion-pill\/\">half of U.S. states required to report abortion complications<\/a>, the same is quite possibly happening today &#8212; with <em>legal<\/em> abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion proponents seem willing to do or say just about anything to make sure women can continue to legally (and not necessarily safely) kill their children in America. But Feinstein and others like her <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pushing-abortion-california-college-misogyny\/\">aren&#8217;t really helping women at all<\/a>. Abortion has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-employees-punished-life\/\">not helped women&#8217;s status in society<\/a>.
