But the networks only covered the aftermath of one of them \u2013 the country that voted <em>for<\/em> abortion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 9, Argentina\u2019s Senate voted against a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/08\/world\/americas\/argentina-abortion-explainer.html\">bill that would have permitted<\/a> elective abortions up to 14 weeks. Nearly three months earlier, on May 25, Irish citizens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2018\/05\/29\/nets-applaud-historic-irish-abortion-vote-womens-rights-win\">voted<\/a>\u00a0to repeal their country\u2019s ban on elective abortion to clear the pathway for abortion up to 12 weeks. The three broadcast networks \u2013 ABC, CBS, NBC \u2013 only covered the Ireland vote during their morning and evening news shows.<\/p>\n<p>While ABC, CBS, and NBC didn\u2019t mention Argentina, other big name outlets found the country\u2019s vote newsworthy, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/09\/world\/americas\/argentina-abortion-vote.html\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/congress\/argentine-senate-debates-measure-to-legalize-abortion\/2018\/08\/08\/487dd6e2-9b6e-11e8-a8d8-9b4c13286d6b_story.html?utm_term=.79a99dc05f10\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. Other outlets, like<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2018\/08\/abortion-vote-argentina-ireland\/567200\/\">The Atlantic<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/aug\/09\/the-guardian-view-on-argentina-and-abortion-a-setback-but-not-the-end\">The Guardian<\/a><\/em>, noticed the comparisons between Ireland and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the networks only reported on Ireland. And not only did the networks report it, but also they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/culture\/katie-yoder\/2018\/05\/29\/nets-applaud-historic-irish-abortion-vote-womens-rights-win\">applauded<\/a> it as a \u201chistoric\u201d vote and \u201cwomen\u2019s rights\u201d win.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/international-abortion-pressure-argentina\/\">READ: <em>International abortion pressure was no match for Argentina&#8217;s love of life<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During <em>CBS News Sunday Morning<\/em>, anchor Lee Cowan declared \u201cthe outcome of the vote is considered a historic vote for women\u2019s rights\u201d May 27. The day before, for the <em>CBS<\/em> <em>Weekend News<\/em>, Saturday anchor Reena Ninan continued that \u201cit&#8217;s being called a quiet revolution and a victory for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ABC weekend anchor Tom Llamas reported on the \u201chistoric vote\u201d with the \u201cfinal tally showing overwhelming support for women\u2019s reproductive rights\u201d during <em>World News Tonight<\/em> May 26.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-filter embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"video-filter video-mrctv video-center vf-530133 embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mrctv.org\/embed\/530133\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>And for NBC, anchor Craig Melvin called the repeal a \u201cstunning turnaround\u201d on a \u201chighly restrictive abortion law\u201d for <em>Today<\/em> on May 26. Later that day, for <em>NBC Nightly News<\/em>, Saturday anchor Jos\u00e9 D\u00edaz-Balart introduced the repeal of the \u201ccountry&#8217;s strict ban on abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Methodology: MRC Culture searched for the terms \u201cIreland AND abortion\u201d from May 25 to May 30 and \u201cArgentina AND abortion\u201d from August 9 to August 14 in Nexis transcripts from the morning and evening news shows of ABC, CBS, and NBC.
