{"id":186596,"date":"2018-08-12T09:28:49","date_gmt":"2018-08-12T14:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=186596"},"modified":"2018-08-09T21:22:12","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T02:22:12","slug":"mayor-veto-stop-pregnancy-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mayor-veto-stop-pregnancy-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor&#8217;s veto didn&#8217;t stop Indiana pregnancy center from opening near abortion facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/life-wins-indiana-pregnancy-center-to-open-across-from-proposed-abortion-facility-following-mayor-s-veto\">Pregnancy Help News<\/a>)\u00a0When plans to open a new pregnancy help center next to a proposed abortion facility were <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/news\/item\/1417-mayor-shoots-down-new-pregnancy-center-in-south-bend-in?highlight=WyJzb3V0aCIsImJlbmQiLCJzb3V0aCBiZW5kIl0=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vetoed<\/a> this spring, Jenny Hunsberger, vice president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenscarecenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women\u2019s Care Center<\/a> in South Bend, Indiana, promised to keep serving the community anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are sad that care for women and families in South Bend got caught in politics,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pregnancyhelpnews.com\/veto-override-fails-in-final-effort-to-open-indiana-pregnancy-center?highlight=WyJzb3V0aCIsImJlbmQiLCJzb3V0aCBiZW5kIl0=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hunsberger said at the time<\/a>, referring to Mayor Pete Buttigieg\u2019s decision to veto a rezoning bill that would have allowed the pro-life pregnancy center to open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough this is a setback, Women\u2019s Care Center continues to serve,\u201d Hunsberger said. \u201cThe 73 women in this community who walk through our doors today will receive compassionate and skilled care without judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-color-pregnancy-centers-essence\/\">READ: <em>Women of color operating pregnancy centers respond to deceptive Essence article<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, Women\u2019s Care Center is making good on that commitment in an even bigger way, with plans to finally open a new location by the end of 2018. Even better, the new location is right across the street from its original destination and right across the street from the same proposed abortion facility.<\/p>\n<p>To the gratitude of the Women\u2019s Care Center team, in the days after South Bend Council failed to override the mayor\u2019s veto, the organization was offered the perfectly zoned property by a local businessman.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Manion, president of Women\u2019s Care Center, shared the story in a press statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cIn 34 years with Women\u2019s Care Center, I have been blessed to witness what I believe are miracles. And one incredible example is the unsolicited offer we received just days after the last council meeting. You may recall that dozens of immediate neighbors expressed their strong support for our new location at 3527 Lincolnway West. And one of those, who has a business right across the street, stepped up and offered his perfectly zoned property at 3530 Lincolnway West. At this new site, without any impediments, we can immediately go to work retrofitting the site, and hope to be serving moms and babies on the westside by year-end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Manion says the new location is the product of not just one donor\u2019s generosity, but that of an entire community of supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany have asked about the \u2018donor\u2019 who made the expansion possible,\u201d she writes. \u201cIt is important to note that it\u2019s not just one. There are dozens who stepped up to support this project in a significant way and hundreds who make our mission possible every single day. Over our history, our donors have always been generous. This is because they care deeply for the women and children we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-pregnancy-centers\/\">READ: <em>Debunking Planned Parenthood&#8217;s false claims about pregnancy centers<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Manion, two out of every three babies born in the city of South Bend now start with Women\u2019s Care Center. Right now, 1,449 babies are expected to clients in St. Joseph County.<\/p>\n<p>For Manion, these babies represent the \u201cchoice\u201d many women would lose if their only recourse in a moment of desperation was to go to the proposed abortion facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany have asked, \u2018Why locate on Lincolnway West?\u2019 The simple answer is that our presence provides women choice,\u201d she writes. \u201cWith 29 centers in 10 states, we have seen time and time again, that next door saves lives. In an environment of peace and safety, many more women are likely to more fully explore their options, come to our center for help if they need it, and ultimately choose
