He was rushed to the East Medical Center in Tyler, Texas. Doctors discovered that Jonathan had internal bleeding and extensive damage to the left side of his brain.<\/p>\n<p>His right side was almost completely paralyzed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpersonhoodfl%2Fposts%2F1926543157366635&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"530\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Doctors advised Wren to find Jonathan\u2019s mother Karen, who was on a mission trip to Africa, and call her home.<\/p>\n<p>But before Karen could reach Jonathan\u2019s bedside, someone else arrived on July 3: Jonathan\u2019s long-estranged wife Jacqueline with a marriage license and a firm conviction, she told LifeSiteNews, that Jonathan would not want to live in that state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018If I\u2019m ever in such a situation,\u2019\u201d Jacqueline Michel said her husband had once told her, \u201c\u2018I want to let nature take its course\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Jonathan\u2019s parents were pleased that their son was receiving life-saving help from the hospital, Jonathan\u2019s wife was trying to put an end to such help.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/children-killed-belgium-euthanasia-legal\/\"><em><strong>READ: Horrific: Three children killed in Belgium since child euthanasia was made legal<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline asked the hospital to stop treating her estranged husband. She told LifeSiteNews that she had asked Jonathan if he wanted \u201call this stuff [the life-support equipment] off of you\u201d and if he did, to move his left foot. She related that Jonathan then moved his left foot.<\/p>\n<p>But Jonathan\u2019s parents told LifeSiteNews that they do not believe this story, that Jonathan is not yet capable of giving consent, and that his left foot spontaneously moves every few minutes. (Karen has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/karen.michel.526\/videos\/pcb.907387249466060\/907387106132741\/?type=3&amp;theater\">posted a video<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook showing this movement.)<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan\u2019s mom Karen told LifeSiteNews that she and Wren had been assured that a decision to end Jonathan\u2019s treatment could not be made before the matter was brought before the hospital\u2019s Ethics Board. Meanwhile, Jonathan was responsive to their presence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image full-width\" data-location=\"12\">\n<div style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/lifesite-cache.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_s3.amazonaws.com\/lifesite\/Jonathan_Michel__alive__responsive__recovering_551_960_75.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"551\" height=\"960\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonathan Michel, alive, responsive, recovering.<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOn Monday [July 16] Jonathan was awake and aware of his surroundings,\u201d Pastor Mark Lee Dickson wrote in his now-viral\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/markleedickson\">Facebook post<\/a>\u00a0in support of the family. \u201cHe held his mom\u2019s phone and tried to turn it on. He also unfastened his niece&#8217;s watch and refastened it on her arm. He closes his eyes when his parents pray with him. These are obvious signs of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the couple had a shock late that afternoon when they were brought into their son\u2019s room and told that his life support was about to be removed. This included the shunt draining fluid from his brain. Removing it would have caused certain death.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Jonathan\u2019s father Wren made his stand and barred the door.<\/p>\n<p>Police were called, but the parents had made it clear they weren\u2019t letting Jonathan go without a fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demanded that it go before the Ethics Board,\u201d said Karen.<\/p>\n<p>Wren met the Ethics Board the next day at 6 PM.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image full-width\" data-location=\"18\">\n<div style=\"width: 655px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/lifesite-cache.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_s3.amazonaws.com\/lifesite\/Wren_and_Karen_Michel_2_645_406_75.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"645\" height=\"406\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wren and Karen Michel<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey finally called me in to tell me that they were seeing progress,\u201d he told LifeSiteNews, \u201cand as long as they were seeing progress, they were going to continue medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctors have been great,\u201d Wren added. \u201cThey\u2019re doing a wonderful job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for four days, Jonathan\u2019s parents were banned from their son\u2019s bedside. Jonathan\u2019s estranged wife Jacqueline told LifeSiteNews that this was the hospital\u2019s decision; Wren and Karen and their supporters say Jacqueline had them banned.<\/p>\n<p>The matter over what is to be done with Jonathan has caused no love to be lost between the Michels and their daughter-in-law, with whom their son has two little daughters. Jonathan\u2019s eldest child is from his first marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan\u2019s mother Karen told LifeSiteNews that Jacqueline left her son three years ago, never lived with him again, fought with him about access to the children, and has a new partner. Only financial constraints prevented Jonathan from embarking on what would be a very expensive divorce. Jonathan\u2019s fully public\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jonathan.michel.7792\">Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0expresses his close bond with his parents and his frustration that his estranged wife was preventing him from seeing his children.<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline told LifeSiteNews that she left her husband briefly after a violent fight, but that the couple was still close and that she will \u201clove him until the day I die.\u201d She said that if Jonathan recovers enough to be able to speak, he will exonerate her reputation. Apparently she has been receiving online threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to kill him,\u201d she said. \u201cI tried to do what he asked. If he\u2019s miserable [when he finds himself partly paralyzed], he can blame [his parents].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t done anything wrong, and the hospital knows that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>LifeSiteNews has seen testimony from hospital personnel stating that Jacqueline has said many times that she intends to have her husband moved to a hospital that will honor her wishes to give him only palliative care. She had refused to consent to any medical procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Wren and Karen are being helped by the Terri Schiavo Life &amp; Hope Network, the Right to Life of East Texas, Texas Right to Life, Texas Senator Bryan Hughes, and Pastor Mark Lee Dickson of the SovereignLOVE Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA multitude of lawyers are working together to fight for Jonathan\u2019s life,\u201d Dickson said.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Jonathan still has a feeding tube and a breathing tube, but his ventilator is no longer on. Instead, he is being given air through a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a tube coming out of his head that is draining [his] spinal fluid and that is monitoring brain pressure,\u201d Dickson reported. \u201cWhile that tube is not considered life support, removing [it] would be detrimental to Jonathan\u2019s health because of his brain swelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after LifeSiteNews contacted Jacqueline, Dickson reported good news: Jacqueline has decided to allow Wren and Karen to visit their son and not to oppose Jonathan\u2019s treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Now his parents hope to ensure that Jonathan continues to receive good care by obtaining guardianship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/schiavos-brother-reject-assisted-suicide-fight-for-patients-rights\">Bobby Schindler<\/a>, whose sister Terri Schiavo was dehydrated to death in 2005 contrary to the wishes of her family after being diagnosed in a persistent vegetative state, told LifeSiteNews that it is very important that the Michels\u2019 fight for their son not to be framed as an \u201cend-of-life\u201d case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my understanding that Jonathan is neither terminal nor facing any immediate end-of-life situation,\u201d he said. \u201cIn other words, Jonathan is brain injured, but he\u2019s not dying. The question is whether his estranged wife and the legal system will recognize this, and release him into the care of his parents who love him and wish to provide the basic care he needs at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schindler said that Jonathan appears to be improving but that it can take years to recover from a brain injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical, for Jonathan\u2019s sake, that we don\u2019t falsely characterize his situation as an \u2018end of life\u2019 case, and recognize that it will only become an \u2018end of life\u2019 case if the law permits his wife to intentionally end his life by depriving him of basic care and treatment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone favoring \u201cletting him go\u201d should understand that what is at stake here is active euthanasia, the intentional ending of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as Jonathan is not actively dying, the only real ethical question is how and where will basic nursing and rehabilitative care be provided to him,\u201d Schindler explained.<\/p>\n<p>Pastor Dickson encouraged Jonathan\u2019s supporters to stand \u201cin the strength that God alone provides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must continue to be a voice for the voiceless and do everything we can to defend life from conception until natural death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a
