In May, Ireland voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution that recognized the equal right to life of the preborn child and his or her mother. Abortion previously was banned, except in cases where the mother\u2019s life was in immediate danger. Following the vote to repeal the Eighth Amendment, politicians announced plans to legalize abortion up to 24 weeks in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/ireland\/catholic-hospitals-set-to-ban-abortion-v9zwkd2qk\">reported<\/a> that the Council for Healthcare of the Irish Bishops\u2019 Conference provided a copy of a document, entitled the <em>Code of Ethical Standards for Healthcare<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em>to a government body established by Health Minister Simon Harris. The document outlines requirements for Catholic hospitals, and prohibits crisis pregnancy counseling that includes information about abortion, or abortion as an option for prenatal diagnosis of a life-limiting condition. The standards apply to 20 hospitals connected with religious orders.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-vote-ireland-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">READ: Opinion: Abortion vote in Ireland reflects failure of the Church to teach truth<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government group that reviewed the bishops\u2019 document is due to report on its findings next month. Top government officials, however, have already issued their condemnation of the ethical standards. Responding the article in the Times, Minister of Health Simon Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SimonHarrisTD\/status\/1022094741578637312\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cAll publicly funded health services providers in State will be expected to provide legal health services- incl. women\u2019s health services.\u201d Harris, who was instrumental in the pro-abortion repeal campaign, clearly means abortion when talking about &#8220;women&#8217;s health services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Harris added, \u201cConscientious objection is for individuals, not institutions.\u201d This pronouncement echoes Prime Minister Leo Varadkar\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irelands-catholic-hospitals-forced-abortions\/\">claim<\/a> that Catholic hospitals would\u00a0\u201cbe expected to carry out any procedure that is legal in this state.&#8221; But abortion, which violently ends the life of a living preborn human being, is not simply a \u201chealth service.&#8221; Institutions that adhere to pro-life ethical guidelines, therefore, cannot commit or refer for abortions &#8212; including Catholic hospitals in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-abortion media portrayed the bishops\u2019 guidance as breaking the law. However, abortion is not yet legal; politicians plan to pass legislation later this year. Rather than breaking the law, the bishops\u2019 document points to a need for protections in the forthcoming abortion law for pro-life institutions. The bishops wrote in a joint\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicbishops.ie\/2018\/06\/13\/statement-of-the-summer-2018-general-meeting-of-the-irish-catholic-bishops-conference\/\">statement<\/a> following the repeal,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u00a0is essential for us as a Church which cares passionately about the gift of life, and wants to support both mothers and their unborn children, to seek better ways of responding to this new and very challenging reality [legal abortion].\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maintaining Catholic hospitals as health care institutions that protect all human lives is one important response.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News broke this week of new guidelines for Catholic hospitals drafted by the Irish Catholic Bishops that would prohibit abortions.
