{"id":186025,"date":"2018-08-07T12:43:24","date_gmt":"2018-08-07T17:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=186025"},"modified":"2018-08-03T14:34:42","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T19:34:42","slug":"world-fertility-population-control-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/world-fertility-population-control-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Half the world&#8217;s population is below replacement level, but the UN wants population control"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/esa.un.org\/unpd\/wpp\/Download\/Standard\/Fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN World Population Prospects 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than half of the world\u2019s population lives in countries where the fertility rates are rapidly reaching dangerously low levels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.niussp.org\/article\/half-the-worlds-population-reaching-below-replacement-fertility\/\">N-IUSSP<\/a>, a demographic research publication,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chalf of the world\u2019s population lives in countries with below replacement fertility (BRF) i.e. with a Total Fertility rate (TFR) of 2.1 per woman.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d The immediate effects of such scenario are a smaller working population, a larger aging population in need of support, an expectation for those of working age to work longer hours and retire late, and childless societies that are more prone to depression and unhappiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a look at the most populated countries &#8212; for example, China, India, and the United States &#8212; the total fertility rate of China has reached 1.60 as a result of the country\u2019s draconian One-Child Policy. The Chinese government relaxed this horrific policy in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-34665539\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopting a Two-Child Policy due to increased aging population and a decrease in working population. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/02\/28\/china-considers-financial-rewards-second-child-baby-boom-fails\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Chinese government considered offering incentives to couples willing to have second child because the Two-Child Policy did not result in the baby boom expected by the Chinese government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/un-planned-parenthood-population-control\/\">READ: <em>According to the UN, Planned Parenthood is about population control<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second largest country, India, reached a fertility rate of 2.2 by 2016 (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rchiips.org\/NFHS\/pdf\/NFHS4\/India.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFHS-4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). However, a closer look shows that out of a total of 29 states and 7 union territories, 24 have reached sub-replacement fertility levels of 2.1 and below. Only two states &#8211;Bihar and Meghalaya &#8212; have a replacement rate over 3.0. Similarly, the United States reached a fertility rate of 1.84 in 2016 and dropped to an all-time low of 1.76 in 2017. The fertility rate of Japan reached 1.4, resulting in \u2018Kodukushi\u2019 &#8212; a phenomenon of dying alone and undiscovered. This problem is directly related to low fertility and aging. Russia reached a replacement rate of 1.62 in 2016 as did other so called over populated countries like Bangladesh, Brazil and Indonesia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite such disturbing demographic changes, the United Nations and its agencies continue to push for population control under different banners. The perfect example of this was when t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wo Planned Parenthood affiliates were recently\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iycoalition.org\/two-planned-parenthood-affiliates-honored-with-population-award-at-un\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">honored at the UN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their population control efforts. Another is UNFPA\u2019s historic involvement in China\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/u.s.-blasts-lead-un-agency-for-supporting-chinas-one-child-policy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0atrocities, as well as World\u2019s Bank\u2019s involvement in India\u2019s coercive family planning program. In fact, it was the United Nations Advisory Mission that visited India in 1965 which recommended target-based IUD insertions and sterilizations. As many as 18 million \u00a0sterilizations were to be achieved within five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65906 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IUD1.jpg\" alt=\"IUD, population control\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IUD1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IUD1-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presently, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familyplanning2020.org\/topics\/48\/commitments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNFPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has been collaborating in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familyplanning2020.org\/microsite\/about-us#microsite_section_12243\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FP2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a campaign to expand contraceptive access and use<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Working in partnership with international abortion advocates and local governments, UNFPA trains midwives and non-medical practitioners to commit abortions and to provide IUD insertions in countries like Uganda, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. UN agencies&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pop.org\/ipas-and-unfpa-are-promoting-abortion-in-rohingya-refugee-camps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humanitarian efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are heavily focused on contraception, and have tried to include abortion under the banner of \u2018sexual and reproductive rights\u2019. But in reality, these efforts are always connected to population control, not women\u2019s rights. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversations at the UN are often tainted by a push for population control. Earlier this month on July 11<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iycoalition.org\/world-population-day-2018-poor-people-do-not-have-rights-to-a-family\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0were organized outside the UN asking people to sign petitions calling for the UN Secretary General to promote a small family norm. At the same time,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an event inside the UN at the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) organized by the UN Major Group for Children and Youth, the guests\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iycoalition.org\/unmgcy-jokes-about-population-control-and-calls-for-one-child-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a renewed push for a \u2018one child policy\u2019 to attain sustainable development and safeguard the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/india-world-population-sterilization\/\">READ: <em>India &#8216;celebrates&#8217; World Population day by setting up sterilization camps<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the UNFPA is reviewing the possible use of Blumenthal\u2019s Post-Partum IUD (Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive) which is reported to be used for up to 12 years. This IUD is clearly not for developed nations but is targeted toward developing countries where women already suffer from anemia and a lack of health facilities. One reason for this is due to possible difficulty in obtaining FDA approval for the IUD. Once reviewed, the device will be used in UNFPA funded programs in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, beginning with India. With such promotion of contraception, one might never guess that one in every four couples in developing nations suffers from infertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global trend of sub-replacement fertility levels combined with the increase in infertility is quite worrying.
