Her mother, Patti, recently told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/inspired-life\/wp\/2018\/06\/08\/this-woman-is-an-exceptionally-effective-capitol-hill-lobbyist-she-also-has-down-syndrome\/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.46de9f354a4c\">Washington Post<\/a>, &#8220;She\u2019s never nervous. When she gives a speech to a big crowd, I\u2019m a wreck, and she\u2019s calm as can be. She doesn\u2019t care who she is speaking to, it\u2019s like she\u2019s talking to her best friend. That\u2019s a real strength when you\u2019re talking to members of Congress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kayla, age 30, is the first registered lobbyist with Down syndrome, and she&#8217;s been lobbying Congress\u00a0part-time for the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) since October 2017. According to the Washington Post, Kayla &#8220;is also taking classes toward her associate degree at Onondaga Community College in central New York.&#8221; She was recruited for her job as a lobbyist by\u00a0Sara Hart Weir, the president and chief executive of NDSS, who knew when she met Kayla that she was something really special.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/down-syndrome-abortion-love-child\/\">READ: <em>Love children with Down syndrome &#8216;for who they are,&#8217; says woman with condition<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Weir told the Post, &#8220;I wanted to put somebody on staff like Kayla who would influence members of Congress. Kayla is one of the most impressive young, vibrant individuals with Down syndrome I have ever met. She\u2019s spunky, she doesn\u2019t take no for an answer, and she\u2019s quite charming. She has all the characteristics of an exceptional lobbyist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2_Iq7Su83RQ\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kayla&#8217;s job is to advocate for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the workplace. And obviously, she is a shining example of the fact that those with disabilities can excel at whatever they put their minds to, even in high pressure workplaces like Capitol Hill. The BBC video above notes that Kayla&#8217;s work &#8220;helped pass the Able to Work Act,&#8221; which allowed people with disabilities to keep both their savings <em>and<\/em> their free healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Post:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"28\">McKeon\u2019s mother said she thinks her daughter operates fluidly in the\u00a0workplace in part because she always was in mainstream schools as a child. She had an aide with her to help her through the school day, but she insisted on being with non-disabled kids rather than in a different school.<\/p>\n<p data-elm-loc=\"29\">\u201cShe\u2019s always been a hard worker and also very stubborn, and I think that\u2019s what\u2019s gotten her to where she is today,\u201d Patti McKeon said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kayla travels independently from Syracuse, New York, to Washington, D.C., for her job.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgigisplayhousesyracuse%2Fphotos%2Fa.656006874528433.1073741843.109144175881375%2F656007817861672%2F%3Ftype%3D3&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She recently got her driver&#8217;s license, and she has competed in the World Games and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/Regions\/north-america\/News-and-Stories\/Stories\/Athlete-Kayla-McKeon.aspx\">Special Olympics<\/a>, even giving speeches for the latter. On <a href=\"http:\/\/kaylamckeon.com\/blog\/\">her blog<\/a>, Kayla wrote earlier this year, &#8220;We can do whatever we set our minds to, we can drive a car, go to college and pursue meaningful careers. We are more alike than different, so lets go and show our awareness of Down Syndrome and celebrate our abilities not our disabilities.&#8221; Kayla told the Washington Post that she believes she&#8217;s &#8220;making a huge difference&#8221; for people with disabilities, and &#8220;making history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, indeed, she is. But perhaps more importantly than making history, she&#8217;s paving the way for future generations &#8212; even those yet to be born &#8212; so long as they are <em>allowed<\/em> to be born in a world that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/iceland-isnt-eradicating-down-syndrome-it-is-killing-every-person-who-has-it\/\">has grown increasingly hostile<\/a> to persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla told the BBC, &#8220;Being a lobbyist on Capitol Hill, I don&#8217;t realize how many lives I touch. This is why I love being a role model for others.&#8221; She stated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=80&amp;v=ZwS0G6Qmmic\">another video interview<\/a> that she has &#8220;a passion for public speaking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kayla&#8217;s mother told the Washington Post, &#8220;Things are changing, things are\u00a0getting better for people with Down syndrome. Kayla is a tip of the iceberg. It will be a common thing someday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/married-down-syndrome-28-years\/\">READ: <em>&#8216;First married couple with Down syndrome&#8217; celebrates 28 years of marriage<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kayla&#8217;s mother is correct. It&#8217;s <em>already<\/em> becoming more common, as we&#8217;ve seen in the cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/blake-texas-business-down-syndrome\/\">Blake Pyron<\/a>, the first Texas business owner with Down syndrome;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/down-syndrome-speaks-against-abortion\/\">Charlotte Fien<\/a>, a United Nations speaker;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/down-syndrome-abortion-love-child\/\">Sara Pickard<\/a>, one of &#8220;Wales&#8217; most inspirational women&#8221;; Ryan LaFave, a volunteer firefighter; and many others.<\/p>\n<p>People with Down syndrome and other disabilities are worthy of life and capable of so much more than the world gives them credit for. Instead of seeking to eradicate those who are different, society would be better off embracing them for who they are.<\/p>\n<p>People like Kayla McKeon are proving every day that people with disabilities can do extraordinary things.
