The last abortionist on the island of Guam has retired, leaving the island completely abortion free<\/a>. There had only been two abortionists committing abortions<\/a> on the island for decades; in 2016, the first abortionist, Dr. Edmund Griley, retired. Dr. John Chiu took over the facility, the Guam Poly Clinic, but does not commit abortions. That left just one remaining abortionist: Dr. William Freeman.<\/p>\n

Before retiring, Freeman committed abortions at the Women’s Clinic, and a doctor who worked under him, Dr. Jeffrey Gabel, has now taken over the facility. Unlike Freeman, Gabel refuses to commit abortions. The facility has also been renamed, and is now called \u201cDr. Gabel\u2019s Clinic Obstetrics & Gynecology Para Famalao\u2019an.” Gabel said that word got around quickly that Freeman had retired and Gabel had taken over, halting all abortions. “I’ve always been against it,” he said.<\/p>\n

Abortion still remains legal in Guam, a United States territory. There are no restrictions at all for a woman to have an abortion if she is less than 13 weeks pregnant. But if the preborn baby has a birth defect or disability, or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, then it is legal to have an abortion up through 26 weeks — when the procedure is especially violent, and the baby is considered viable, or able to survive outside the womb:<\/p>\n
