Now, a Live Action News review of the most recent state abortion data reveals that later-term abortions in some states were as high as <em>15 to 17 percent of all abortions<\/em> reported. National abortion data reveals that over 100,000 abortions occur in the second and third trimesters in just one year, according to the latest numbers reported by the Guttmacher Institute (2014). Polls show that the American public is uneasy with aborting a child beyond the first trimester (13 weeks and up) and believe it should be restricted after this point.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear from previous Live Action News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/late-term-abortion-caught-ending-babys-life\/\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that late-term abortions are not being committed solely for health reasons. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/taxpayers-fund-abortion-new-mexico\/\">several states<\/a>, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/\">New Mexico<\/a>, taxpayers are actually forced to fund late-term procedures (after the 20th week) done\u00a0<em>for any reason<\/em>\u00a0the woman desires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2014, more than 100,000 abortions took place in the 2nd and 3rd trimester<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In January of 2017, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s former &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special affiliate<\/a>,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/surprise-guttmacher-survey-shows-women-get-taxpayer-funded-abortions-may-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a>, which tracks abortion statistics,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fb_induced_abortion_5.pdf\">published<\/a>\u00a0abortion statistics\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/induced-abortion-united-states\">showing<\/a>\u00a0that 926,200 abortions were reported to them in 2014. And\u00a0although abortions after 20 weeks have been a legislative issue for years, Guttmacher did not break these numbers down by specific gestation. Instead, the organization published a graph which shows that over 100,000 abortions are committed in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy in one year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>13-15 weeks (6.2%): 57,424<\/li>\n<li>16-20 weeks (3.8%): approximately 35,195<\/li>\n<li>21 weeks and greater (1.3%): approximately 12,040<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_185374\" style=\"width: 418px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185374\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185374\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/100K-later-term-abortions-in-2014-per-Guttmacher.jpg\" alt=\"Image: 100K later term abortions in 2014 per Guttmacher\" width=\"408\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/100K-later-term-abortions-in-2014-per-Guttmacher.jpg 408w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/100K-later-term-abortions-in-2014-per-Guttmacher-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-185374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">100K later term abortions in 2014 per Guttmacher (Graph image: Guttmacher Institute)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4554338\/table\/T1\/?report=objectonly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> of national abortions by gestation for years 1998-2010, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4554338\/pdf\/nihms718534.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Obstetrics and Gynecology,<i>\u00a0<\/i>which did not separate procedures at 13 weeks, reported the following numbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>9-13 weeks: 2,406,102<\/li>\n<li>14-17 weeks: 421,446<\/li>\n<li>18 weeks or greater: 265,800<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More recent <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Second-and-Third-trimester-abortions-by-state-Edited.pdf\">data<\/a>\u00a0published by\u00a0individual states according to gestational age was even more shocking.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action News reviewed data from 36 states and the District of Columbia plus data from New York City, but data by\u00a0gestational weeks was unavailable for 15 states plus D.C. The published abortion data ranged in years as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2017: 11 states<\/li>\n<li>2016: 22 states<\/li>\n<li>2015: 3 states<\/li>\n<li>Unknown: 15 states (includes D.C.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of the states that published abortion data by gestational weeks, with few exceptions, later-term abortion percentages ranged from 6-17 percent:<\/p>\n<p><strong>In three states, 2nd and 3rd trimester abortions accounted for 13-17 percent of all abortions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Missouri: 17.3 percent<\/li>\n<li>Ohio: 15.4 percent<\/li>\n<li>Wisconsin: 15 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_185357\" style=\"width: 868px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185357\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185357\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Missouri-late-term-abortion-stats-by-gestation-2016.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Missouri late term abortion stats by gestation 2016\" width=\"858\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Missouri-late-term-abortion-stats-by-gestation-2016.jpg 858w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Missouri-late-term-abortion-stats-by-gestation-2016-300x90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Missouri-late-term-abortion-stats-by-gestation-2016-768x230.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Missouri-late-term-abortion-stats-by-gestation-2016-700x210.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Missouri-late-term-abortion-stats-by-gestation-2016-500x150.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-185357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Missouri late term abortion stats by gestation 2016<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>In 12 states, 2nd and 3rd trimester abortions accounted for 11-13 percent of all abortions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nine states had later term abortion percentages of at least 11 percent: Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Maine, Tennessee, Minnesota and Washington.<\/li>\n<li>Three states had later term abortion percentages between 12-13 percent: Arkansas, Michigan, Pennsylvania.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185086 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Pennsylvania-abortions-by-gestation-2016.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Pennsylvania abortions by gestation 2016\" width=\"489\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Pennsylvania-abortions-by-gestation-2016.jpg 489w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Pennsylvania-abortions-by-gestation-2016-300x288.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/>Pennsylvania abortions by gestation 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 19 states, 2nd and 3rd trimester abortions accounted for 6-10 percent of all abortions\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Six states had later term abortion percentages between 6-7 percent: Iowa, S. Dakota, Texas, Florida, Nebraska and Oklahoma.<\/li>\n<li>Thirteen states had later term abortion percentages between 8-10 percent: Idaho, New Mexico, Alaska, New York, Delaware, Vermont, Alabama, Louisiana, Utah, W. Virginia, N. Dakota, N. In addition, some states did not break down procedures at 13 weeks, grouping them with those from the first trimester. Had this data been available, it is likely that later term percentages in those states would have been higher.
