Jill and I have adopted nine children,\u00a0all exposed to drugs and alcohol, and most having more severe special needs. We also have two biological children who were so young when we started to adopt they do not know life without our crazy, ever\u00a0growing family. So\u00a0people hear our story and often say things like, \u201cYou\u2019re so special!\u201d The problem is, it\u2019s not true.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t get married wanting to save the world, although adoption was a part of our plan from before our marriage. At that\u00a0time\u00a0we had no idea it would be kids with special needs, nor did we have any idea it would be nine!\u00a0But along the way we realized a few things that led us to continue to say yes to welcoming these kids into our family.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/embed\/medias\/3b9fw40g9q.jsonp\" async><\/script><script src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/E-v1.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"wistia_responsive_padding\" style=\"padding: 42.5% 0 0 0; position: relative;\">\n<div class=\"wistia_responsive_wrapper\" style=\"height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%;\">\n<div class=\"wistia_embed wistia_async_3b9fw40g9q videoFoam=true\" style=\"height: 100%; position: relative; width: 100%;\">\n<div class=\"wistia_swatch\" style=\"height: 100%; left: 0; opacity: 0; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; top: 0; transition: opacity 200ms; width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"filter: blur(5px); height: 100%; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/embed\/medias\/3b9fw40g9q\/swatch\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First, we knew that it was our responsibility. We are Christians, and as such we are commanded to care for orphans. The Bible is replete with laws and mandates designed to protect and provide for the fatherless. Caring for them is not optional.<\/p>\n<p>Second, we discovered that those who are charged with the care of children in the system are often not willing or not able to really do what is best for the child in need. When the goal for the child is set for adoption, the system is supposed to find the right family for that child. Often, however, they languish in foster care for years, especially if they are older, of color, or have special needs. Many of them age out of the system, and those with special needs often end up in group homes the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Third, we realized that we could ask for help, but the kids could not. People often ask us how we can manage all of the needs. I will confess that it\u2019s not easy. Sometimes we fail. But we also know that our children are in a much better situation today and for their future than they would have been if they continued to be in state care. They have a family. They are and will be cared for. There are over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/cb\/afcarsreport23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/cb\/afcarsreport23.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1530289888060000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEjMylboRlt2cPvAeNdirPtglsXw\"><span class=\"m_-7624569296508855156TextRun m_-7624569296508855156Underlined m_-7624569296508855156SCXW96658787\" lang=\"EN-US\">one hundred thousand children<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the foster system today that are legally cleared to be adopted. That is a staggering number. There are over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/cb\/afcarsreport23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/cb\/afcarsreport23.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1530289888060000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEjMylboRlt2cPvAeNdirPtglsXw\"><span class=\"m_-7624569296508855156TextRun m_-7624569296508855156Underlined m_-7624569296508855156SCXW96658787\" lang=\"EN-US\">four hundred thousand total<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the foster system. The need cannot be\u00a0minimized\u00a0and the numbers are not getting smaller. In fact, they are growing.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth, the church is not taking up the responsibility to be the solution they are called\u00a0and\u00a0commanded to\u00a0carry out. There is really no excuse for the church to not solve this problem. With\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/jssr.12330?author_access_token=6TIAJ0plWmfoT8CKXywoOYta6bR2k8jH0KrdpFOxC64MqjczIASPsUhKK26SvkbhsyE2e7kPD7R5ARZtNTKTgqA0DSGuI7VEqdYWfpHAD5r-ulyLlGbeH3eaMrTFqqcF&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/jssr.12330?author_access_token%3D6TIAJ0plWmfoT8CKXywoOYta6bR2k8jH0KrdpFOxC64MqjczIASPsUhKK26SvkbhsyE2e7kPD7R5ARZtNTKTgqA0DSGuI7VEqdYWfpHAD5r-ulyLlGbeH3eaMrTFqqcF%26&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1530289888060000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFaD_U0wFBzZCCHZQl3Mc_Jai0WTw\">nearly four hundred thousand<\/a>\u00a0churches in America, every church could take one child in as a foster child and nearly eliminate the need for foster families. If one out of three\/four churches adopted one of those children that are waiting to be adopted, we would empty the system of waiting children. This is an eminently solvable problem. But the problem lingers on and continues to grow worse each year.\u00a0Why?<\/p>\n<p>My wife and I are not some special saints blessed with some extra grace that others have not received. We are two sinful and broken\u00a0yet gloriously redeemed people who have, by the grace of God, tried to be obedient to the call on our lives.<\/p>\n<p>One of our constant prayers is that the church in America would\u00a0rise up\u00a0and lead on this issue. We need to stop depending on the government to solve this problem.\u00a0It is not the government\u00a0that\u00a0was commanded by the Creator of\u00a0all of\u00a0these children to protect and care for them; rather, that is the Church&#8217;s calling. This is our job, and we need to take it more seriously if we ever expect the world to take us and the gospel more seriously.<\/p>\n<p>My wife and I\u00a0have found solidarity with other Christians answering this call. One profound example of large-scale obedience is occurring within the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). Supported by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humancoalition.org\/partners\/church-god-christ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.humancoalition.org\/partners\/church-god-christ\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1530289888060000&amp;usg=AFQjCNETn7dEdKVRgScL85xqZg1uwgsgZg\">partnership<\/a>\u00a0with Human Coalition and implementation of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/familylifecampaign.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/familylifecampaign.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1530289888060000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGKVg02ZLqy-7JoyJfXAQ81OSEFDQ\">Family Life Campaign<\/a>,\u00a0COGIC members are radically answering the biblical mandate to step in for the vulnerable by\u00a0adopting\u00a0children who would otherwise be at risk of being aborted or left in foster care indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/daley-predicted-die-first-birthday-family-adopted\/\">READ: <em>Daley was predicted to die before her first birthday, but this family adopted her anyway<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We would all benefit from a little introspection on how we&#8217;ve answered this call. If we are not willing to care for the least of these, how will our neighbors trust that God and\u00a0His people really\u00a0care for them? This is a gospel issue and the world\u00a0is\u00a0watching\u00a0to see how we respond. If we love the least of these in truly practical ways, through fostering and even adopting, the world will\u00a0notice\u00a0and be moved.<\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0will ask\u00a0why &#8212; why are we compelled to love so radically.
