{"id":183871,"date":"2018-06-12T10:50:47","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T14:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=183871"},"modified":"2018-06-09T23:51:22","modified_gmt":"2018-06-10T03:51:22","slug":"facebook-planned-parenthood-sex-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/facebook-planned-parenthood-sex-teens\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Facebook allowing Planned Parenthood to promote sex to teens?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>It\u2019s no surprise that Planned Parenthood wants comprehensive sex education at every public school in the nation, but now it seems to think the advertising rules of Facebook don\u2019t apply when it comes to its ads promoting sex education.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/05\/ads-with-political-content\/\">new advertising policies<\/a> for ads that are related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/214754279118974?helpref=faq_content\">political content<\/a>. Since Facebook considers abortion, health, education, and government reform to be political issues, virtually everything related to Planned Parenthood ads fall under this banner. The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/05\/ads-with-political-content\/\">new policy states<\/a> all political ads will be subject to the following rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starting today, all election-related and issue ads on Facebook and Instagram in the US must be clearly labeled \u2013 including a \u201cPaid for by\u201d disclosure from the advertiser at the top of the ad. This will help ensure that you can see who is paying for the ad \u2013 which is especially important when the Page name doesn\u2019t match the name of the company or person funding the ad.<\/li>\n<li>When you click on the label, you\u2019ll be taken to an archive with more information. For example, the campaign budget associated with an individual ad and how many people saw it \u2013 including their age, location and gender.<\/li>\n<li>That same archive can be reached by anyone in the world at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/politicalcontentads\">facebook.com\/politicalcontentads<\/a>. People visiting the archive can see and search ads with political or issue content an advertiser has run in the US for up to seven years.<\/li>\n<li>Advertisers wanting to run ads with political content in the US will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/04\/transparent-ads-and-pages\/\">verify their identity and location<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite these new rules, it seems that some ads paid for by Planned Parenthood may not comply with Facebook&#8217;s requirements and restrictions for its ads.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/policies\/ads\/prohibited_content\/adult_products_or_services\">ad policy<\/a> requires that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ads must not promote the sale or use of adult products or services, except for ads for family planning and contraception. Ads for contraceptives must focus on the contraceptive features of the product, and not on sexual pleasure or sexual enhancement, and must be targeted to people 18 years or older.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183887\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183887\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183887 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.32.56-PM-700x473.png\" alt=\"Facebook advertising rules\" width=\"700\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.32.56-PM-700x473.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.32.56-PM-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.32.56-PM-768x519.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.32.56-PM-500x338.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.32.56-PM.png 1356w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>However, Planned Parenthood seems to have ignored the stipulation on the focus of the add not being &#8220;on sexual pleasure or sexual enhancement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183889\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183889\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183889 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-700x696.png\" alt=\"Facebook ad by Planned Parenthood\" width=\"700\" height=\"696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-700x696.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-300x298.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-768x763.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-80x80.png 80w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM-500x497.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.53-PM.png 1020w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Chris Martin of <a href=\"https:\/\/lifewaysocial.com\/planned-parenthood-is-using-facebook-ads-to-tell-middle-and-high-school-students-that-sex-is-hot\/\">Lifeway Social reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Despite those rules, Facebook\u2019s ad system is somehow permitting an organization whose business model relies on young people being sexually active to deliver content that promotes sexual activity among people under the age of 18.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, these ads are clearly targeted not for the purpose of showing the use of a condom in its role of pregnancy or disease prevention, but as part of a fun, exciting experience. &#8220;Sex is hot&#8221; is certainly not a phrase that explains the function of a condom, in accordance with Facebook&#8217;s policy.<\/p>\n<p>And as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/planned-parenthood-targets-teen-girls-with-sex-is-hot-ads-on-facebook\">Life Site News Reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It would not be the first time Facebook bent the rules for a political ally. In March, former Obama for America media director Carol Davidsen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/facebook-uses-its-heft-to-support-liberal-causes-while-suppressing-conserva\">revealed<\/a> that Facebook allowed former President Barack Obama\u2019s campaign to take users\u2019 personal information because \u201cthey were on our side.\u201d The social media giant is one of several tech companies currently embroiled in an ongoing scandal over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/rnc-trump-campaign-warn-facebook-and-twitter-not-to-censor-conservatives\">alleged discrimination<\/a> against conservative users and groups.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ads appear to further violate Facebook&#8217;s policy, which states that ads for permitted adult products or services may not be targeted ads to users under 18. Looking at the ad&#8217;s performance and audience, viewers can see that over 25 percent of the people who saw, for example, this ad, were under the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183888\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183888\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183888 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.45-PM-700x505.png\" alt=\"Facebook ads by Planned Parenthood\" width=\"700\" height=\"505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.45-PM-700x505.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.45-PM-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.45-PM-768x554.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.45-PM-500x360.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.06.45-PM.png 1820w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This picture and other &#8220;fun&#8221; condom pictures with varying text appear in other ads placed around Facebook. In fact, The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/politicalcontentads\/?active_status=all&amp;q=planned%20parenthood%20sex%20ed\">archive of ads from Planned Parenthood<\/a>, <em>only<\/em> for sex education promotion (there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/politicalcontentads\/?active_status=all&amp;q=planned%20parenthood\">whole slew of other ones<\/a> from the abortion corporation, as well), is quite large.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183885\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183885\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183885 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.29.20-PM-700x571.png\" alt=\"Facebook ads by Planned Parenthood\" width=\"700\" height=\"571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.29.20-PM-700x571.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.29.20-PM-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.29.20-PM-768x626.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.29.20-PM-500x408.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.29.20-PM.png 1322w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>And a significant percentage of the audience of these other ads are also minors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183891\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183891\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183891 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.21.55-PM-700x461.png\" alt=\"Facebook ads by Planned Parenthood\" width=\"700\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.21.55-PM-700x461.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.21.55-PM-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.21.55-PM-768x506.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.21.55-PM-500x329.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-4.21.55-PM.png 1812w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, that doesn&#8217;t include the majority of 11-15-year old children who reportedly lie about their age when they sign up for Facebook, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2013\/jul\/26\/children-lie-age-facebook-asa\">one story reported<\/a> included over 40 percent of these young people who said they were over 18. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2016\/08\/the-social-media-invisibles\/497729\/\">more recent story speculates<\/a> that if there were 7.5 million out of 20 million Facebook users under 13 in 2011, that number may have snowballed by now. So these numbers, according to Facebook&#8217;s own advertising reports, are likely off, with the number of minors being reached much larger than reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183886\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183886\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183886 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM-700x468.png\" alt=\"Facebook ads from Planned Parenthood\" width=\"700\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM-700x468.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM-500x334.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM-360x240.png 360w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.52.24-PM.png 1786w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it&#8217;s clear there is some targeting to minors even by the verbiage of the campaign. &#8220;Oppose Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage programs&#8221; clearly encourages teen sex, even if it doesn&#8217;t say so&#8211;and obviously with a a quarter to a third of the audience for these ads being between 13-17, it&#8217;s a given that this audience is being encouraged to have sex.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?attachment_id=183890\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-183890\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-183890 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.55.35-PM-700x501.png\" alt=\"Facebook ads from Planned Parenthood\" width=\"700\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.55.35-PM-700x501.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.55.35-PM-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.55.35-PM-768x550.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.55.35-PM-500x358.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-09-at-3.55.35-PM.png 1810w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are no warnings of the dangers or risks involved, whether physically or emotionally. In fact, as Live Action has previously exposed, sex education under Planned Parenthood&#8217;s umbrella is a disturbing concept.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u7oeSAOZwdk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Further, as recent <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/parents-protest-planned-parenthood-win\/\">Live Action News<\/a> investigative <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-infiltrates-ny-school\/\">articles<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ny-school-district-planned-parenthood-7th-graders-sex\/\">revealed<\/a>, when Planned Parenthood is involved in comprehensive sex education in schools, the curriculum is one that many parents would be upset to know their kids were being taught. The same goes for Facebook, a place populated by young people.
