Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and\u00a0Ryan LaFave is no exception. The 22-year-old is a graduate of Cowlitz 2’s fire science program and is a volunteer with Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue in Kelso, Washington, where his father David is chief. LaFave also happens to have Down syndrome. Last summer, he was at home when two neighbor children came running to his door.<\/p>\n

The children were distressed. Their house was on fire and two other siblings were still at home. Keeping his composure, LaFave dialed 911 and went to the house with the children, who also have special needs. Thankfully, outside of the home were the two other children. LaFave kept them calm and ensured they didn’t try to re-enter the house to retrieve any items or pets while they waited for the fire trucks to arrive.<\/p>\n

Lieutenant Jason Sanders was the acting duty chief that day and said that if LaFave hadn’t been there and hadn’t responded properly, the children could have been injured.<\/p>\n

\u201cHad he not been present, the situation certainly could have been different,\u201d he told The Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

LaFave has been awarded for his efforts by the Washington State fire marshal and the Washington State Patrol as well as his fire station. Each organization gave him a challenge coin including the first one the state fire marshal has ever made. Challenge coins<\/a> have been around since World War I and are given to people who go above and beyond.<\/p>\n

“Ryan\u2019s actions show he has a servant’s heart. And that\u2019s the difference,” Washington Fire Marshal Charles LeBlanc told KATU 2<\/a>. “It\u2019s the servant’s heart that makes the difference. Not everybody has it. For those who do have it, they don\u2019t always act on it. Ryan did both that day.”<\/p>\n

LaFave learned how to stay cool under pressure in high school when he participated in Cowlitz’s Fire and Science program. After graduation, he continued to volunteer with the fire department.<\/p>\n

“There was a lot of chaos, a lot of pets, a lot of children, a working fire, and Ryan was a calming force, that’s what the duty chief told me,” said Ryan’s father.<\/p>\n

LaFave isn’t the first hero\u00a0with Down syndrome to emerge in recent news. Last summer<\/a> a teenager with Down syndrome saved a girl from drowning in Italy.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s not about what they can\u2019t do,” said David LaFave. “It\u2019s always about what they can do. And that\u2019s been his approach his whole life. And with his brother and sister too. It\u2019s about what they can do, and he\u2019s certainly demonstrated that he has the capacity to be successful.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
