Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees on Tuesday amid concerns regarding data, political bias and censorship, and privacy.<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg faced questions from Republican pro-life senators, including Senator Ted Cruz<\/a> of Texas and Ben Sasse<\/a> of Nebraska.<\/p>\n

Cruz used his time to speak on behalf of the “great many Americans who… are concerned that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship.”<\/p>\n

In mentioning the censorship of<\/a>\u00a0conservative pages, groups, and trending topics, Cruz asked Zuckerberg if there were any instances of censorship for groups such as Planned Parenthood. Zuckerberg could think of one instance, but admitted that the Silicon Valley, where Facebook is located, is “an extremely left-leaning place.”<\/p>\n

This fact may be even more concerning, considering that 15,000-20,000 Facebook employees engage in content review, opening the door to possible content removal based on political viewpoints.<\/p>\n

Similar concerns were raised by Sen. Sasse, particularly on what Facebook defines as “hate speech,” leading to the policing of speech, specifically content from pro-life organizations, because some may find the content offensive.<\/p>\n
