The country&#8217;s Eighth Amendment currently recognizes the equal right to life of the preborn child and his or her mother. The referendum would repeal the Eighth Amendment and grant legislators the ability to legalize abortion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irish-denying-right-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through all nine months of pregnancy for any reason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media coverage continues to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irish-media-bogus-poll-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favor abortion activists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighting the international pressure from abortion lobbyists to legalize the killing of preborn children in one of the world\u2019s most pro-life nations. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/mar\/28\/ireland-sets-abortion-referendum-date\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote that the United Nation\u2019s human rights committee has condemned Ireland\u2019s pro-life protections of the preborn as \u201ccruel, inhuman, and degrading.\u201d Yet, the same United Nations has <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeinstitute.net\/current-projects\/abortion-never-saves-a-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ireland as \u201cone of the safest places in the world for a mother to have a baby.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/28\/europe\/ireland-abortion-referendum-date-intl\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> included the fact that Ireland \u201cis among just 50 countries that allow terminations only when a woman\u2019s life is at risk,\u201d yet the report fails to mention that the United States is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/28\/europe\/ireland-abortion-referendum-date-intl\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of just seven nations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allows abortion for any reason up to birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Irish voters approve the referendum, legislators have said they would legalize abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Pro-life groups have pointed out that there would be no meaningful protection of the preborn at any stage of development, and the referendum sets no limits on lawmakers. Former abortionist Anthony Levatino describes the most common surgical abortion in the first trimester:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5THDmys8z30\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life Irish groups, such as Save the 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Pro-Life Campaign, continue to meet with voters across the country. Emphasizing the humanity of the preborn and the danger to disabled babies that abortion would pose, pro-life activists are changing hearts and minds in the referendum debate.
