{"id":180809,"date":"2018-03-24T15:47:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-24T20:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=180809"},"modified":"2024-09-20T16:04:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T21:04:45","slug":"pro-life-debunk-report-abortion-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-debunk-report-abortion-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life leaders debunk new report claiming abortion is \u2018clearly safe\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/pro-life-leaders-debunk-new-report-claiming-abortion-is-clearly-safe\">LifeSiteNews<\/a>)\u00a0Pro-life advocates are criticizing a new paper claiming that abortion is so overwhelmingly \u201csafe\u201d that abortion-specific regulations in many states are \u201cunnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released the 240-page paper, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog\/24950\/the-safety-and-quality-of-abortion-care-in-the-united-states\">The Safety and Quality of Abortion Care in the United States<\/a>,\u201d this week. The paper, funded by organizations who have made charitable donations to Planned Parenthood, purports to provide a \u201ccomprehensive review of the current state of the science related to the provision of safe, high-quality abortion services in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It evaluated the four main abortion procedures used in the United States\u2014medication, aspiration, dilation and evacuation (D&amp;E), and induction\u2014on a range of criteria, including safety and effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The paper found that all four methods were \u201cclearly safe.\u201d Critics point out, however, that the paper ignored the safety of the preborn baby when making this claim. The paper also failed to mention the hundreds of documented women (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.operationrescue.org\/archives\/archive-of-documented-abortion-patient-death-reports-by-operation-rescue\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operationrescue.org\/archives\/archive-of-documented-abortion-patient-death-reports-by-operation-rescue\/\">here<\/a>) who have died as a direct result of having a legal abortion.<\/p>\n<p>American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists executive director Dr. Donna Harrison<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/is-abortion-really-safe-critics-respond-to-new-study-34947\"> told<\/a> Catholic News Agency that the \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d report discounted multiple very real medical risks to women, on top of ignoring the fact that \u201cabortion is never safe for the unborn child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbortion can harm women immediately with the risks of bleeding and damage to their womb and other pelvic organs,\u201d she said. Harrison underscored how abortion has been associated with harming women \u201cpsychologically, increasing their risk of suicide, drug abuse, and hospitalization from depression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jgw4X7Dw_3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The paper frowns on abortion regulations. In \u201cmany parts of the country, abortion-specific regulations on the site and nature of care, provider type, provider training, and public funding\u201d only serve to \u201cdiminish this dimension of quality care.\u201d Such regulations \u201climit the number of available providers, misinform women of the risks of the procedures they are considering, overrule women\u2019s and clinician\u2019s medical decision making, or require medically unnecessary services and delays in care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cmedically unnecessary\u201d regulations the paper lists include: holding abortion facilities to the standards of ambulatory surgical centers; prohibiting dilation &amp; evacuation (also known as dismemberment) abortions; mandatory waiting periods; forbidding family-medicine physicians, certified nurse-midwives, nurse-practitioners, and physician assistants from performing abortions; notification of abortion\u2019s health risks; hospital admitting privileges; mandatory ultrasounds; and in-person pre-abortion counseling.<\/p>\n<p>The paper also found that abortion could be reliably provided in the clinics and office-based settings in which 95% of abortions are already performed, rather than hospitals. It further claimed there was no evidence supporting the need for abortion facilities to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, and abortion did not increase a woman\u2019s risk of \u201csecondary infertility, pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders, abnormal placentation (after a D&amp;E abortion), preterm birth, or breast cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report did acknowledge, however, that having two or more aspiration abortions increased the risk of giving birth before 28 weeks in a future pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>The study also claimed that abortion carries no increased risk of \u201cdepression, anxiety, and\/or posttraumatic stress disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A range of medical evidence, however, has linked abortion to increased risks of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/new-research-shows-abortion-poses-higher-risk-of-death-than-giving-birth\/\">death<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lozierinstitute.org\/induced-abortion-and-risk-of-subsequent-preterm-birth\/\"> future preterm births<\/a>, other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/study-one-abortion-increases-risks-in-future-pregnancies\">future pregnancy complications<\/a> including miscarriage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.data.lifesitenews.com\/resources\/abortion\/the-abortion-breast-cancer-link\">breast cancer<\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/psychological-risks-traumatic-aftereffects-of-abortion\/\"> mental health problems<\/a> including suicide, depression, trauma, and behavior such as eating disorders, drug abuse, divorce, and chronic relationship problems.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silentnomoreawareness.org\/\">Silent No More<\/a> exist to help women tell their stories of the spiritual and emotional trauma they experienced when having an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The report went so far as to claim that the only real threats to the safety of abortion-seeking women are pro-life laws, which supposedly \u201ccreate barriers to safe and effective care.\u201d Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood worker who is now a prominent pro-life activist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/is-abortion-really-safe-critics-respond-to-new-study-34947\">denied<\/a> that any pro-life safety regulations on the books increase the danger of having an abortion. \u201cAny surgery requires pre-op. Abortion should be no different,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/brother-woman-died-planned-parenthood\/\">READ: Brother of woman who died from abortion at Planned Parenthood: Abortion is not a safe procedure<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a statement to LifeSiteNews, Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins questioned the reliability of any of the report\u2019s findings, noting that such studies are dependent on data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2015\/mar\/26\/john-thorp-clark-forsythe-inaccurate-abortion-stat\/\">voluntarily reported<\/a> by the abortion industry itself. California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wyoming <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-reporting-toward-a-better-national-standard-summary\/\">do not report<\/a> any abortion data to the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs any good reporter knows, you need multiple sources to verify a story,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat we have is the word of abortion partisans, and not real, verifiable data. It\u2019s pathetic to play politics with women\u2019s health by refusing to require accurate reporting and real tracking of the harms of abortion, relying on the word of abortion advocates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further calling the authors\u2019 impartiality into question is a statement by a co-chair of the committee that wrote the study.
